What it actually does
The vulnerability permits arbitrary file reads through path traversal in file-handling code, allowing an attacker to supply crafted paths that escape intended directories and access any readable file on the underlying system.
Why it matters to the business
Exposure of sensitive configuration files, credentials, or proprietary data could lead to further compromise, regulatory penalties, and loss of customer trust; the issue affects a widely used data-processing library with high ecosystem prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker identifies a Pandas operation that accepts an attacker-controlled file path, supplies a traversal sequence such as ../../etc/passwd, and retrieves the contents of arbitrary files without authentication or user interaction.
How to fix it
Upgrade the pandas package to the latest patched release that resolves the path traversal flaw; validate and sanitize all file paths before passing them to Pandas APIs; enforce least-privilege file-system permissions on the host.
How to confirm the fix worked
Review pandas version in the environment against the fixed release; test the vulnerable code path with known traversal sequences and confirm that attempts to read outside the intended directory are rejected.
Typical attack path
- Locate an application or script that invokes a vulnerable Pandas file-reading function with untrusted input
- Craft a path traversal payload to reference a target file outside the expected directory
- Submit the payload via network request, API call, or command-line argument
- Receive the file contents in the response or observe side-channel leakage
- Use obtained data to escalate privileges or move laterally
How to detect it
Search application and web-server logs for requests containing path traversal sequences such as ../ or ..\ combined with Pandas-related endpoints; inspect process execution for unexpected file reads initiated by python processes running pandas code.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching pandas in all environments within the next sprint due to the high CVSS score and public disclosure
- Add input validation and path canonicalization around all Pandas file operations
- Scan dependency manifests for the vulnerable version and block builds until upgraded
- Monitor for unusual file-access patterns in application logs
The record
Python Pip Pandas v2.2.2 was discovered to contain an arbitrary file read vulnerability.
