What it actually does

Integer overflow in the Compound Document Binary File format parser leads to a heap-based buffer overflow during sector allocation table processing, enabling arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could execute code on systems processing untrusted compound document files, potentially compromising container management workflows that depend on the affected library and requiring urgent patching to prevent service disruption or data compromise.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious compound document file that triggers an integer overflow in the sector allocation table parser. The file is delivered to a target system where the vulnerable library processes it, resulting in a heap buffer overflow that allows arbitrary code execution in the context of the processing application.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected installations to the fixed version github.com/containers/podman/v4: 4.4.2 or later. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict processing of untrusted compound document files and monitor for anomalous behavior during file parsing.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed version of the affected package meets or exceeds the fixed release. Test by attempting to parse known-good and crafted compound document files in a controlled environment to confirm the overflow condition is no longer present.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a specially formatted compound document file to trigger integer overflow in sector allocation table handling
  2. Deliver the malicious file to the target environment via email, download, or shared storage
  3. Induce the vulnerable application to parse the file during normal operation
  4. Leverage the resulting heap buffer overflow to execute arbitrary code

How to detect it

Examine application logs and system event records for unexpected crashes, memory allocation failures, or errors during compound document file parsing. Correlate with file access timestamps and process execution history around the time of suspected incidents.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to the fixed version across all affected deployments
  • Implement file-type restrictions or sandboxing for untrusted compound document processing until patched
  • Review logging and monitoring coverage for file parsing operations to detect anomalous crashes or memory errors

The record

An integer overflow vulnerability exists in the Compound Document Binary File format parser of v1.14.52 of the GNOME Project G Structured File Library (libgsf). A specially crafted file can result in an integer overflow that allows for a heap-based buffer overflow when processing the sector allocation table. This can lead to arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
