A problem in how Linux handles certain damaged storage formats could make the computer crash or stop working properly when it tries to use those damaged disks or files.

What it actually does

After detecting corruption in a UDF block bitmap buffer during load, the kernel fails to mark the buffer as invalid, allowing subsequent allocation attempts to reuse the still-loaded corrupted buffer and produce inconsistent or erroneous results.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using UDF filesystems on potentially corrupted media may experience unexpected crashes, failed storage operations, or denial of service, increasing downtime and operational risk especially on older unpatched kernels.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access supplies a crafted UDF image containing a corrupted block bitmap. The kernel loads the bitmap, detects corruption on first allocation attempt, then reuses the same buffer on the next allocation without re-validation, leading to unpredictable behavior or kernel instability.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. For systems unable to upgrade immediately, avoid mounting untrusted UDF media.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be via kernel version string or git log; test by mounting a UDF image with known bitmap corruption and verifying that repeated allocations consistently fail with an error rather than proceeding with corrupted data.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access or ability to supply a UDF-formatted block device or image
  2. Prepare UDF filesystem with deliberately corrupted block bitmap
  3. Mount the image or device triggering bitmap load and first allocation
  4. Perform a second allocation from the same bitmap to trigger reuse of corrupted buffer
  5. Observe kernel error, crash, or resource allocation failure

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for UDF bitmap load errors followed by subsequent allocation attempts; inspect for repeated failed block allocations or warnings referencing bitmap verification on the same superblock after an initial corruption message.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit on all systems exposing UDF mounts
  • Restrict mounting of removable or untrusted media until patched
  • Monitor for UDF-related kernel oops or allocation failures in system logs
  • Review and apply the exact fixed version 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be in build pipelines

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: Avoid using corrupted block bitmap buffer When the filesystem block bitmap is corrupted, we detect the corruption while loading the bitmap and fail the allocation with error. However the next allocation from the same bitmap will notice the bitmap buffer is already loaded and tries to allocate from the bitmap with mixed results (depending on the exact nature of the bitmap corruption). Fix the problem by using BH_verified bit to indicate whether the bitmap is valid or not.
