What it actually does
Error path in cow_file_range_inline fails to respect locked_page, allowing btrfs_folio_end_all_writers to be called on an unlocked folio and triggering an assertion panic in fs/btrfs/subpage.c:871 during buffered writes under IO error conditions.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected kernel crashes and transaction aborts on systems using btrfs, disrupting workloads and requiring reboots; high downstream prevalence increases exposure across Linux environments.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker performs accelerated or repeated delalloc writes that hit designed IO errors, causing __process_pages_contig to unlock the folio inside cow_file_range_inline; subsequent writepage path then hits the locked-folio assertion during exit or flush.
How to fix it
Upgrade Linux kernel to 6.10.4 or later stable releases containing commit 061e41581606000a83ce0f0f01d6ad338f3704e9; apply vendor backports where available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version >= 6.10.4; run btrfs-specific xfstests including generic/475 under error injection; verify absence of the folio_test_locked assertion in subpage.c.
Typical attack path
- Open or create file on btrfs and trigger buffered writes with delalloc
- Force IO errors via disk faults or reproducer patterns such as generic/475
- Invoke cow_file_range_inline which unlocks folio on error
- Continue through __extent_writepage and btrfs_folio_end_all_writers on unlocked folio
- Trigger assertion failure and kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for 'assertion failed: folio_test_locked(folio)' and 'btrfs_folio_end_all_writers' call traces; correlate with btrfs error messages about aborted transactions and IO failures.
- assertion failed: folio_test_locked(folio), in fs/btrfs/subpage.c:871
- BTRFS: error (device .* state .*) in free_log_tree
- BTRFS warning (device .* state .*) Skipping commit of aborted transaction
- kernel BUG at fs/btrfs/subpage.c:871
- btrfs_folio_end_all_writers+0x55b/0x610
What your security team should do
- Patch kernels to fixed versions immediately on all btrfs hosts
- Monitor for btrfs transaction abort and subpage assertion panics in logs
- Restrict untrusted local code execution on systems until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: make cow_file_range_inline() honor locked_page on error The btrfs buffered write path runs through __extent_writepage() which has some tricky return value handling for writepage_delalloc(). Specifically, when that returns 1, we exit, but for other return values we continue and end up calling btrfs_folio_end_all_writers(). If the folio has been unlocked (note that we check the PageLocked bit at the start of __extent_writepage()), this results in an assert panic like this one from syzbot: BTRFS: error (device loop0 state EAL) in free_log_tree:3267: errno=-5 IO failure BTRFS warning (device loop0 state EAL): Skipping commit of aborted transaction. BTRFS: error (device loop0 state EAL) in cleanup_transaction:2018: errno=-5 IO failure assertion failed: folio_test_locked(folio), in fs/btrfs/subpage.c:871 ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at fs/btrfs/subpage.c:871!
