What it actually does
Use-after-free memory corruption in mlxsw_sp_sb_occ_snapshot when writing absolute port numbers instead of page-relative values to the extended SBSR register on Spectrum-4 hardware (>256 ports) during devlink sb occupancy snapshot/clearmax operations.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability or crashes on systems using Nvidia/Mellanox Spectrum-4 switches when administrators run standard devlink buffer commands; high prevalence in Linux-based networking environments increases operational risk until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local user privileges executes devlink sb occupancy snapshot or clearmax on a Spectrum-4 system; the mlxsw driver populates the SBSR register with incorrect absolute port indices, triggering slab-use-after-free in the shared buffer handling path.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit f443e374ae131c168a065ea1748feac6b2e76613 or a later release that correctly computes ports relative to the port_page in the mlxsw spectrum_buffers driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of commit f443e374ae131c168a065ea1748feac6b2e76613 in the kernel tree; re-run devlink sb occupancy commands on Spectrum-4 hardware and confirm absence of KASAN slab-use-after-free reports.
Typical attack path
- Gain local shell access on a Linux host with Spectrum-4 mlxsw hardware
- Run devlink sb occupancy snapshot or clearmax command
- Trigger KASAN-detected use-after-free leading to potential denial of service
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for mlxsw_sp_sb_occ_snapshot, devlink_nl_sb_occ_snapshot_doit, and slab-use-after-free involving Spectrum-4 port handling; correlate with execution of devlink sb commands.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to f443e374ae131c168a065ea1748feac6b2e76613 on all Spectrum-4 systems
- Limit unprivileged access to devlink commands via capabilities or SELinux policies until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for mlxsw-related KASAN or slab corruption messages
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mlxsw: spectrum_buffers: Fix memory corruptions on Spectrum-4 systems The following two shared buffer operations make use of the Shared Buffer Status Register (SBSR): # devlink sb occupancy snapshot pci/0000:01:00.0 # devlink sb occupancy clearmax pci/0000:01:00.0 The register has two masks of 256 bits to denote on which ingress / egress ports the register should operate on. Spectrum-4 has more than 256 ports, so the register was extended by cited commit with a new 'port_page' field. However, when filling the register's payload, the driver specifies the ports as absolute numbers and not relative to the first port of the port page, resulting in memory corruptions [1]. Fix by specifying the ports relative to the first port of the port page.
