What it actually does
A NULL pointer is passed to page_address() in sk_msg_recvmsg when processing a zero-length skb (such as a TCP FIN packet) queued in the ingress_msg list during BPF sockmap operations, causing a kernel panic on architectures where page_address(NULL) faults.
Why it matters to the business
Systems may experience unexpected kernel crashes and reboots when certain BPF sockmap features are used with TCP connections that are shut down, leading to service disruptions on affected Linux deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers a TCP FIN via shutdown on a sockmap-enabled socket, which enqueues a zero-length skb with no pages. sk_msg_recvmsg then calls copy_page_to_iter on a NULL page obtained from sg_page, resulting in a panic during page_address on vulnerable architectures.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to include commit 195b7bcdfc5adc5b2468f279dd9eb7eebd2e7632 which skips zero-length skbs in sk_msg_recvmsg.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the sk_msg_recvmsg function contains the zero-length skb check; re-run sockmap_basic selftests including sockmap_skb_verdict_shutdown on Loongarch or similar platforms.
Typical attack path
- Identify or create a TCP socket attached to a BPF sockmap
- Perform shutdown(SHUT_WR) to send a FIN packet
- Trigger sk_msg_recvmsg processing of the resulting zero-length skb
- Cause NULL page dereference leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs and oops reports for references to sk_msg_recvmsg, copy_page_to_iter, page_address, and NULL pointer dereferences on systems running sockmap workloads.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or distribution update as soon as possible
- Restrict untrusted access to systems using BPF sockmap until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for sk_msg_recvmsg and copy_page_to_iter panics

This crash is because a NULL pointer is passed to page_address() in the sk_msg_recvmsg(). Due to the different implementations depending on the architecture, page_address(NULL) will trigger a panic on Loongarch platform but not on x86 platform. So this bug was hidden on x86 platform for a while, but now it is exposed on Loongarch platform. The root cause is that a zero length skb (skb->len == 0) was put on the queue. This zero length skb is a TCP FIN packet, which was sent by shutdown(), invoked in test_sockmap_skb_verdict_shutdown(): shutdown(p1, SHUT_WR); In this case, in sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue(), num_sge is zero, and no page is put to this sge (see sg_set_page in sg_set_page), but this empty sge is queued into ingress_msg list. And in sk_msg_recvmsg(), this empty sge is used, and a NULL page is got by sg_page(sge). Pass this NULL page to copy_page_to_iter(), which passes it to kmap_local_page() and to page_address(), then kernel panics. To solve this, we should skip this zero length skb. So in sk_msg_recvmsg(), if copy is zero, that means it's a zero length skb, skip invoking copy_page_to_iter(). We are using the EFAULT return triggered by copy_page_to_iter to check for is_fin in tcp_bpf.c.
