What it actually does
When kprobe and synthetic event generation test code is compiled into the kernel instead of as loadable modules, the init routines acquire permanent references to event files that are never released on exit, leaving dynamic events locked and preventing cleanup or removal.
Why it matters to the business
Custom or distribution kernels that enable these tests as built-ins will emit warnings at boot, fail self-test suites, and may leave tracing infrastructure in an inconsistent state, complicating debugging and compliance validation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to influence kernel configuration or supply a malicious kernel image compiles the affected test modules as built-ins; on boot the locked events trigger warnings and block normal tracing operations, resulting in denial of service for diagnostic tools.
How to fix it
Ensure the tracing self-test modules are built exclusively as loadable modules; apply the upstream fix that enforces module-only builds (commit a85bae262ccecc52a40c466ec067f6c915e0839d) and rebuild any affected kernels.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot the updated kernel and confirm that kprobe_trace_self_tests_init and related initcalls complete without warnings; verify that ftracetest and dynamic event cleanup succeed; inspect .config to ensure CONFIG_KPROBE_EVENTS and CONFIG_SYNTH_EVENTS tests remain modular.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or modify kernel build configuration to force built-in compilation of trace event self-tests
- Build and deploy the resulting kernel image to target systems
- Trigger boot or explicit self-test execution to surface the locked-event warnings and failures
How to detect it
Inspect kernel boot logs and dmesg for the exact WARNING stack trace containing kprobe_trace_self_tests_init and trace_kprobe_is_busy; search for failed ftracetest runs or persistent locked dynamic events via tracefs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize rebuilding and redeploying any custom kernels that include the affected tracing tests as built-ins
- Add build-time checks to enforce module-only configuration for kernel tracing self-tests
- Monitor boot logs for the specific WARNING originating from kprobe_trace_self_tests_init
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Build event generation tests only as modules The kprobes and synth event generation test modules add events and lock (get a reference) those event file reference in module init function, and unlock and delete it in module exit function. This is because those are designed for playing as modules. If we make those modules as built-in, those events are left locked in the kernel, and never be removed. This causes kprobe event self-test failure as below.
