What it actually does
The flaw is an integer overflow validation check in block/ioctl.c that itself performs a signed addition (9223372036854775807 + 4095) which overflows, triggering UBSAN reports and allowing improper input validation that can lead to incorrect size handling in GUP and bio operations.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers may crash systems or escalate privileges on Linux-based servers and devices, causing downtime and requiring broad kernel updates across fleets with high downstream impact due to kernel prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies crafted ioctl parameters to block devices that force the faulty overflow check during bio_iov_iter_get_pages and related GUP paths, bypassing intended size limits to achieve memory corruption or denial of service.
How to fix it
Update to fixed kernel versions including 5.10.221 or apply commit 58706e482bf45c4db48b0c53aba2468c97adda24, rebuild, and reboot all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm updated kernel version via uname, re-run syzkaller or UBSAN-enabled tests targeting block/ioctl paths to verify absence of overflow reports, and audit for the original addition pattern.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on a vulnerable Linux system
- Identify block devices and issue malicious ioctl or write operations
- Trigger the signed overflow in the ioctl size check within block/ioctl.c
- Exploit resulting invalid GUP or bio state for privilege escalation or crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for UBSAN signed-integer-overflow messages referencing block/ioctl.c or the exact overflow value 9223372036854775807 + 4095, plus related GUP or ext4 write stack traces.
- UBSAN: signed-integer-overflow in ../block/ioctl.c:36:46
- 9223372036854775807 + 4095 cannot be represented in type 'long long'
- bio_iov_iter_get_pages
- iomap_dio_bio_iter
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule kernel upgrades to 5.10.221 or equivalent fixed releases
- Limit unprivileged access to block device ioctls via LSM or capabilities
- Enable kernel hardening options including UBSAN in test environments
- Monitor for local exploit attempts and plan staged rollouts given broad Linux usage

[ 63.018142] ---[ end trace ]--- Historically, the signed integer overflow sanitizer did not work in the kernel due to its interaction with `-fwrapv` but this has since been changed [1] in the newest version of Clang; It was re-enabled in the kernel with Commit 557f8c582a9ba8ab ("ubsan: Reintroduce signed overflow sanitizer"). Let's rework this overflow checking logic to not actually perform an overflow during the check itself, thus avoiding the UBSAN splat. [1]: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/82432
