What it actually does
Race condition in f2fs_remount clears SB_INLINECRYPT flag before parse_options resets it, allowing concurrent f2fs_file_open or f2fs_new_inode calls to select encryption implementation without inlinecrypt, risking data corruption when wrappedkey_v0 is enabled.
Why it matters to the business
Potential data corruption on f2fs filesystems during remount operations on Linux systems, increasing operational risk and recovery costs for organizations relying on inline encryption in storage stacks.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers f2fs remount while simultaneously creating or opening files, exploiting the window where the SB_INLINECRYPT flag is cleared to bypass inline encryption and induce corruption, particularly when wrappedkey_v0 is active; listed threat actors have targeted similar Linux kernel resource and write issues in espionage and financially motivated campaigns.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit 38a82c8d00638bb642bef787eb1d5e0e4d3b7d71 or later stable releases containing the resolution for CVE-2024-40971.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source or package version contains commit 38a82c8d00638bb642bef787eb1d5e0e4d3b7d71; test remount behavior under concurrent file operations to confirm SB_INLINECRYPT flag stability.
Typical attack path
- Gain local access to a Linux system using f2fs
- Trigger concurrent f2fs_remount operation
- Perform file creation or open during the flag-clear window
- Force use of non-inline encryption path leading to corruption on wrappedkey_v0 setups
How to detect it
Review system logs for f2fs remount events coinciding with file creation or open operations; inspect kernel traces or audit logs for encryption selection anomalies around the affected commit window.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades to the fixed commit across all f2fs-using systems
- Monitor EPSS and threat actor activity for similar Linux kernel races
- Restrict local access and review f2fs mount/remount scripts for concurrency risks
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: remove clear SB_INLINECRYPT flag in default_options In f2fs_remount, SB_INLINECRYPT flag will be clear and re-set. If create new file or open file during this gap, these files will not use inlinecrypt. Worse case, it may lead to data corruption if wrappedkey_v0 is enable. Thread A: Thread B: -f2fs_remount -f2fs_file_open or f2fs_new_inode -default_options <- clear SB_INLINECRYPT flag -fscrypt_select_encryption_impl -parse_options <- set SB_INLINECRYPT again
