What it actually does
Use-after-free caused by a dangling sk pointer left attached to a struct socket after creation fails in protocol families; a subsequent fentry probe on __sock_release that invokes bpf_get_socket_cookie reads from the already-freed sk object.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory corruption on Linux systems can produce crashes, denial of service, or local privilege escalation; risk is highest on hosts that load untrusted or debugging BPF programs and on freshly booted systems performing socket-heavy operations. No known ransomware or CISA KEV usage reduces immediate urgency, yet the flaw affects the entire Linux ecosystem including servers, containers, and embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker loads an fentry BPF program on __sock_release that calls bpf_get_socket_cookie; they then trigger a socket-creation failure path (for example by running traceroute -I on a fresh VM) so that inet_create or equivalent attaches the sk reference and later frees it via __sk_destruct, after which the probe reads the freed memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 78e4aa528a7b1204219d808310524344f627d069 or later; the commit clears the struct socket reference inside sk_common_release so that every protocol family benefits from the fix. Rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; where immediate patching is impossible, restrict unprivileged BPF loading via sysctl.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of commit 78e4aa528a7b1204219d808310524344f627d069 in the running kernel source or via "git log --oneline | grep 78e4aa5"; confirm that KASAN no longer reports slab-use-after-free in __sock_gen_cookie when the original reproducer (fentry probe + failing socket creation) is executed.
Typical attack path
- Load a malicious fentry BPF program attached to __sock_release that invokes bpf_get_socket_cookie
- Trigger a failing socket creation sequence in any protocol family that calls sock_init_data before error return
- Cause __sock_release to run, executing the probe against the now-freed sk object
- Read or write the freed memory to achieve denial of service or escalate privileges
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for KASAN reports containing __sock_gen_cookie, bpf_get_socket_ptr_cookie, or __sock_release together with slab-use-after-free; correlate with recent execution of network diagnostic tools such as traceroute immediately before the crash; inspect audit logs for BPF program loads that attach to __sock_release.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __sock_gen_cookie
- bpf_get_socket_ptr_cookie
- bpf_prog.*__sock_release
- __sk_destruct
- inet_create
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update containing commit 78e4aa528a7b1204219d808310524344f627d069 on all Linux hosts within the next maintenance window
- Temporarily disable unprivileged BPF loading (kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled=1) on systems that cannot be patched immediately
- Add the supplied KASAN signatures and bpf_get_socket_ptr_cookie symbols to SIEM rules for crash-log monitoring
- Review any production workloads that attach fentry programs to socket-release paths and restrict them to trusted sources

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: do not leave a dangling sk pointer, when socket creation fails It is possible to trigger a use-after-free by: * attaching an fentry probe to __sock_release() and the probe calling the bpf_get_socket_cookie() helper * running traceroute -I 1.1.1.1 on a freshly booted VM A KASAN enabled kernel will log something like below (decoded and stripped): ================================================================== BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __sock_gen_cookie (./arch/x86/include/asm/atomic64_64.h:15 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-arch-fallback.h:2583 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:1611 net/core/sock_diag.c:29) Read of size 8 at addr ffff888007110dd8 by task traceroute/299 CPU: 2 PID: 299 Comm: traceroute Tainted: G E 6.10.0-rc2+ #2 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.16.2-debian-1.16.2-1 04/01/2014 Call Trace: <TASK> dump_stack_lvl (lib/dump_stack.c:117 (discriminator 1)) print_report (mm/kasan/report.c:378 mm/kasan/report.c:488) ? __sock_gen_cookie (./arch/x86/include/asm/atomic64_64.h:15 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-arch-fallback.h:2583 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:1611 net/core/sock_diag.c:29) kasan_report (mm/kasan/report.c:603) ? __sock_gen_cookie (./arch/x86/include/asm/atomic64_64.h:15 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-arch-fallback.h:2583 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:1611 net/core/sock_diag.c:29) kasan_check_range (mm/kasan/generic.c:183 mm/kasan/generic.c:189) __sock_gen_cookie (./arch/x86/include/asm/atomic64_64.h:15 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-arch-fallback.h:2583 ./include/linux/atomic/atomic-instrumented.h:1611 net/core/sock_diag.c:29) bpf_get_socket_ptr_cookie (./arch/x86/include/asm/preempt.h:94 ./include/linux/sock_diag.h:42 net/core/filter.c:5094 net/core/filter.c:5092) bpf_prog_875642cf11f1d139___sock_release+0x6e/0x8e bpf_trampoline_6442506592+0x47/0xaf __sock_release (net/socket.c:652) __sock_create (net/socket.c:1601) ...
