What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in ocfs2_journal_dirty() because b_assoc_map is uninitialized after bdev->bd_super removal; triggers kernel oops and panic during journal operations on ocfs2 under low-credit or reflink/extent-modification workloads.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using the ocfs2 filesystem experience sudden kernel crashes and reboots during routine file operations such as cloning or extent changes, causing unplanned downtime; the issue affects upstream Linux kernels prior to the listed fix commit and is present in many distributions shipping ocfs2.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access mounts or uses an ocfs2 filesystem and issues operations (ioctl clone, reflink remap, or extent flag changes) that drive the journal into a no-credit state; the missing b_assoc_map check then dereferences NULL inside ocfs2_journal_dirty, crashing the kernel. No remote vector or named threat-actor campaigns are associated with this CVE.

How to fix it

Upgrade the kernel to a version containing commit 0550ad87711f815b3d73e487ec58ca7d8f56edbc; rebuild and reboot with the patched ocfs2 module. Until patched, avoid mounting ocfs2 volumes or restrict unprivileged access to clone/ioctl operations on those volumes.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 0550ad87711f815b3d73e487ec58ca7d8f56edbc; re-run xfstests generic/186 and verify absence of the NULL dereference oops in dmesg; inspect ocfs2_journal_dirty source to ensure the early-abort path is present before any b_assoc_map dereference.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or process execution on a host with an ocfs2 filesystem
  2. Trigger file-range clone or extent modification via vfs_clone_file_range or ocfs2_reflink_remap_blocks
  3. Force low journal credits (e.g., xfstests generic/186 pattern)
  4. Reach ocfs2_journal_dirty with uninitialized b_assoc_map, causing NULL dereference and panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for "BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference" with RIP pointing to ocfs2_journal_dirty and a call trace containing ocfs2_reflink_remap_extent, ocfs2_grow_tree, or ocfs2_split_extent; correlate timestamps with user-initiated file-clone or reflink activity.

  • ocfs2_journal_dirty+0x14f/0x160 [ocfs2]
  • BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
  • RIP: 0010:ocfs2_journal_dirty
  • ocfs2_create_new_meta_bhs.isra
  • ocfs2_reflink_remap_extent

What your security team should do

  • Apply the upstream fix commit immediately on any host that mounts ocfs2
  • Add kernel oops monitoring for ocfs2_journal_dirty to SIEM rules
  • Inventory ocfs2 usage across the fleet and schedule reboots
  • Temporarily restrict CAP_SYS_ADMIN or unprivileged ioctl access on ocfs2 mounts if patching is delayed

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: fix NULL pointer dereference in ocfs2_journal_dirty() bdev->bd_super has been removed and commit 8887b94d9322 change the usage from bdev->bd_super to b_assoc_map->host->i_sb. This introduces the following NULL pointer dereference in ocfs2_journal_dirty() since b_assoc_map is still not initialized. This can be easily reproduced by running xfstests generic/186, which simulate no more credits. [ 134.351592] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000 ...
