A flaw in Linux can make certain storage setups suddenly unusable and risk losing data when programs write to files at the same time.

What it actually does

Race condition between concurrent hole punching (fallocate/punch_hole) and AIO+DIO write paths in ocfs2 allows removal of an extent while it remains referenced in the DIO end-io worker, causing ocfs2_search_extent_list to fail, on-disk corruption, and forced read-only remount.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using the ocfs2 filesystem can experience sudden data corruption, application I/O failures, and unplanned read-only states that require unmounting, fsck, and potential data recovery, increasing downtime and operational risk on affected Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access to an ocfs2 filesystem issues fallocate to punch a hole over an extent that is simultaneously being prepared by another thread's AIO+DIO write; after the extent is removed under the inode lock, the end-io worker thread fails to locate it and triggers corruption handling.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 3c26b5d21b1239e9c7fd31ba7d9b2d7bdbaa68d9; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; if immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict unprivileged use of fallocate and AIO+DIO on ocfs2 mounts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 3c26b5d21b1239e9c7fd31ba7d9b2d7bdbaa68d9 or equivalent backport; re-run fstests generic/300 and verify absence of the extent-not-found error path; inspect dmesg for removal of the prior race-condition error messages.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or process execution on a system with ocfs2 mounted
  2. Perform AIO+DIO writes to a file while concurrently calling fallocate with hole-punch mode on overlapping offsets
  3. Trigger the race window that removes the extent under ip_alloc_sem
  4. Observe ocfs2_mark_extent_written failure and filesystem transition to read-only

How to detect it

Search kernel logs (dmesg, syslog, journalctl) for ocfs2 error strings indicating extent lookup failure or forced read-only transition; correlate timestamps with processes performing fallocate and direct I/O on ocfs2 mounts.

  • On-disk corruption discovered. Please run fsck.ocfs2 once the filesystem is unmounted.
  • ocfs2_change_extent_flag: Owner .* has an extent at cpos .* which can no longer be found
  • ocfs2_mark_extent_written:.*ERROR: status = -30
  • OCFS2: File system is now read-only.
  • ocfs2_dio_end_io_write:.*ERROR: status = -3

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all hosts using ocfs2 within the next maintenance window
  • Add kernel log monitoring for ocfs2 corruption strings to detect any in-the-wild triggering
  • Review and limit use of fallocate with AIO+DIO workloads on ocfs2 until patched
  • Document ocfs2 usage and schedule filesystem migration testing if patches cannot be applied quickly
