A bug in Linux file caching can let an attacker who already has access to the machine crash the system or potentially run harmful code by mishandling memory that should have been cleaned up.

What it actually does
Use-after-free in cachefiles_ondemand_get_fd() triggered when a restore command causes the same ondemand request to be selected and processed multiple times, allowing write to a freed slab object during daemon_read handling.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using fscache/cachefiles for network filesystem caching face risk of kernel crashes, memory corruption, or local privilege escalation, increasing downtime and potential data exposure in servers, containers, and embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access mounts a cachefiles filesystem and concurrently issues restore commands from multiple daemon threads; this races the request lifecycle so that a freed request structure is re-selected, its data pointer dereferenced, and attacker-controlled values written into the slab, enabling further corruption or code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit 99e9c5bd27ddefa0f9db88625bf5e31c1e833d62 or later stable releases that add an extra reference count to cachefiles_req and prevent multiple completions; rebuild and reboot all affected hosts.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 99e9c5bd27ddefa0f9db88625bf5e31c1e833d62; re-run the original fuzz scenario or cachefiles ondemand stress tests and verify absence of KASAN slab-use-after-free reports.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on a Linux system with cachefiles enabled
- Mount a cachefiles-backed filesystem and start ondemand daemon threads
- Trigger concurrent cachefiles_ondemand_send_req and cachefiles_ondemand_restore operations
- Force xa_erase + complete on one thread while another thread still holds a reference to the same REQ_A
- Execute cachefiles_ondemand_get_fd on the now-freed request to perform the slab write
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for cachefiles_ondemand_daemon_read, cachefiles_ondemand_get_fd, and slab-use-after-free messages; inspect auditd or system call traces for concurrent restore and copen operations on cachefiles devices.

- cachefiles_ondemand_get_fd
- cachefiles_ondemand_restore
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-tenant Linux systems within the next 30 days
- Disable cachefiles ondemand mode where not required until patches are applied
- Monitor kernel logs for cachefiles-related KASAN or BUG reports
- Test the fixed kernel in staging environments before broad rollout

This issue is caused by issuing a restore command when the daemon is still alive, which results in a request being processed multiple times thus triggering a UAF. So to avoid this problem, add an additional reference count to cachefiles_req, which is held while waiting and reading, and then released when the waiting and reading is over. Note that since there is only one reference count for waiting, we need to avoid the same request being completed multiple times, so we can only complete the request if it is successfully removed from the xarray.
