What it actually does
CVE-2024-38856 is an incorrect authorization flaw in Apache OFBiz through 18.12.14. OFBiz endpoint access controls could allow unauthenticated or insufficiently authorized users to trigger screen rendering code when screen definitions rely on endpoint-level authorization rather than performing explicit permission checks themselves. In affected configurations, an attacker can reach screens or screen-rendering logic that should require authentication or elevated privileges, potentially exposing sensitive business data or enabling unauthorized state-changing actions. The issue is remotely reachable over the network, has low attack complexity, and is listed in CISA KEV with active exploitation observed in the wild.
Why it matters to the business
Apache OFBiz is commonly used for ERP, commerce, accounting, order management, inventory, and customer-facing business workflows, so unauthorized access can affect sensitive operational and financial data. Successful exploitation may let attackers view or manipulate business records, abuse administrative workflows, or stage follow-on compromise through exposed OFBiz functionality. Because this vulnerability is in CISA KEV, has very high EPSS likelihood, and had a federal remediation deadline of 2024-09-17, internet-exposed OFBiz systems should be treated as high-priority legacy exposure if not already upgraded.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first identifies an exposed Apache OFBiz instance and fingerprints the version or behavior of the application. They then probe OFBiz control endpoints and screen-rendering routes looking for endpoints that are reachable without proper authentication or with only low-privileged access. If the backing screen definition assumes the endpoint already enforced permissions, the attacker can cause OFBiz to render or execute screen logic that should have been protected. Depending on which screens are reachable in the deployed application, the attacker may read sensitive application data, invoke privileged workflows, or use the access as a foothold for further exploitation. Public exploitation and KEV listing mean defenders should assume opportunistic scanning and exploitation attempts may have occurred on exposed systems.
How to fix it
Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 18.12.15 or later. For source-based deployments of apache/ofbiz-framework, ensure the fix commit 6c3b0068a99bb3b93321fdb983a0046b0679c86d or a later secure revision is present. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict OFBiz access to trusted networks or VPNs, remove direct internet exposure, enforce authentication at a reverse proxy or WAF for OFBiz control paths, and review custom screen definitions to ensure they explicitly check user permissions instead of relying only on endpoint configuration. Do not rely on mitigation alone for KEV-listed exposure; complete the vendor upgrade as the durable fix.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed Apache OFBiz version is 18.12.15 or later, or that the running source tree includes commit 6c3b0068a99bb3b93321fdb983a0046b0679c86d or a later branch containing the fix. Review build artifacts, container images, package manifests, and startup banners rather than relying only on repository metadata. From an unauthenticated session, verify that sensitive OFBiz control endpoints and protected screens return authentication or authorization failures instead of rendering screen content. Repeat validation for custom OFBiz screens and plugins, especially those that previously assumed endpoint-level authorization. Confirm internet-facing exposure has been removed or restricted where OFBiz does not need to be publicly reachable.
Typical attack path
- Discover an internet-facing Apache OFBiz application through scanning, search engines, or application fingerprinting.
- Determine whether the instance appears to be Apache OFBiz 18.12.14 or earlier, or otherwise missing the relevant authorization fix.
- Send crafted requests to OFBiz control endpoints or screen-rendering paths that are expected to require authentication or authorization.
- Trigger screen rendering code where the screen definition does not independently enforce user permissions.
- Access sensitive rendered content, execute unauthorized business functions, or enumerate additional OFBiz functionality.
- Use the unauthorized access to pivot to higher-value data, administrative workflows, credential theft, or additional application vulnerabilities.
How to detect it
Investigate OFBiz web access logs, reverse proxy logs, WAF logs, application logs, authentication logs, and endpoint telemetry around the period before patching. Focus on unauthenticated or low-privileged requests to OFBiz control endpoints that resulted in successful 200 responses, redirects into protected workflows, large response sizes, or access to administrative, accounting, order, party, product, entity, or webtools screens. Compare requests with valid session creation events; requests that render protected screens without a preceding authenticated session are especially suspicious. Search application logs for screen-rendering exceptions, permission-check anomalies, and repeated probing of control paths by the same source IP. Review post-exploitation signs such as newly created OFBiz users, role or permission changes, unusual exports, changes to service definitions, unexpected scheduled jobs, modified OFBiz component files, or outbound connections from the OFBiz server after suspicious requests. Because active exploitation has been observed, preserve logs and perform timeline analysis for any OFBiz instance that was internet-accessible while running 18.12.14 or earlier.

What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all Apache OFBiz deployments, including source builds, containers, test systems, and internet-facing instances.
- Prioritize upgrade of all OFBiz versions through 18.12.14 to 18.12.15 or later, or to a source revision containing commit 6c3b0068a99bb3b93321fdb983a0046b0679c86d.
- Treat unpatched internet-exposed OFBiz systems as likely targeted because the vulnerability is KEV-listed, actively exploited, and has very high EPSS likelihood.
- Temporarily restrict OFBiz access to trusted networks, VPN, or authenticated reverse proxy paths until upgrade is complete.
- Review custom OFBiz screen definitions and extensions for explicit permission checks, especially screens reachable through unauthenticated or low-privileged endpoints.
- Hunt historical logs for unauthenticated requests to OFBiz control and screen-rendering endpoints, authorization bypass patterns, and unusual access to administrative or data-heavy screens.
- After patching, rotate credentials or API secrets if logs show suspicious access to administrative, user-management, order, accounting, or data-export functionality.
The record
Incorrect Authorization vulnerability in Apache OFBiz. This issue affects Apache OFBiz: through 18.12.14. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 18.12.15, which fixes the issue. Unauthenticated endpoints could allow execution of screen rendering code of screens if some preconditions are met (such as when the screen definitions don't explicitly check user's permissions because they rely on the configuration of their endpoints).
