What it actually does
The ntfs3 driver performed an arithmetic operation on a 32-bit variable that could overflow when computing volume block offsets, leading to incorrect pointer or size calculations.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems mounting NTFS volumes risk kernel instability, crashes, or memory corruption that can interrupt services and require reboots or forensic investigation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a crafted NTFS image or triggers repeated allocation patterns that cause the 32-bit overflow during offset computation, potentially allowing out-of-bounds memory access or denial of service.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2d1ad595d15f36a925480199bf1d9ad72614210b or later stable releases that use a 64-bit variable for the affected calculation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel source contains the referenced commit or check that the ntfs3 source uses a 64-bit type for vbo calculations; test with known large-volume images.
Typical attack path
- Mount a malicious or specially crafted NTFS volume on a vulnerable kernel
- Trigger the ntfs3 path that evaluates vbo = 2 * vbo + skip with large values
- Cause integer overflow and subsequent incorrect memory operation
- Achieve kernel panic, memory corruption, or limited code execution
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for ntfs3-related warnings, oops, or panic messages containing offset calculations; inspect auditd or system call traces for unusual NTFS mount activity.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on any system that mounts NTFS volumes
- Apply the fix or backport the 64-bit variable change immediately
- Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs related to ntfs3 after upgrade
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Use 64 bit variable to avoid 32 bit overflow For example, in the expression: vbo = 2 * vbo + skip
