What it actually does

The flaw permits an attacker to trigger unbounded memory allocation in the VTE terminal emulation library by sending a crafted window-resize escape sequence, resulting in denial of service through resource exhaustion.

Why it matters to the business

Applications and desktop environments relying on the affected terminal library may become unresponsive or crash when memory is exhausted, disrupting user workflows and requiring manual intervention to recover affected processes.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access and the ability to write to a terminal controlled by a vulnerable VTE instance sends repeated window-resize escape sequences that cause the library to allocate memory without bound until the process or system is starved of resources.

How to fix it

Upgrade the GNOME VTE library to a version containing commit 036bc3ddcbb56f05c6ca76712a53b89dee1369e2 (corresponding to 0.76.3 or later). Rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications or distributions after the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed VTE version or commit hash is at or beyond 036bc3ddcbb56f05c6ca76712a53b89dee1369e2; attempt to reproduce the memory-consumption behavior with a controlled resize-sequence test in a non-production environment to verify the issue is resolved.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or terminal access on a system using the vulnerable library
  2. Identify or spawn a process that uses the VTE library for terminal emulation
  3. Inject a stream of window-resize escape sequences into the terminal input
  4. Observe progressive memory consumption until the target process or host becomes unresponsive

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for sudden spikes in memory usage by processes linked to the VTE library; correlate with terminal session activity or input containing escape sequences; examine coredumps or memory profiles of affected terminal emulators for signs of repeated resize handling.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the library update to all affected systems as soon as packages are available
  • Inventory applications and container images that statically or dynamically link against VTE
  • Monitor process memory usage for terminal-related workloads as a temporary compensating control
  • Restrict untrusted local input sources that can reach terminal emulators until patches are deployed

The record

GNOME VTE before 0.76.3 allows an attacker to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a window resize escape sequence, a related issue to CVE-2000-0476.
