What it actually does

The flaw fails to clear stale KASAN stack shadow poison on ARM when CPUs exit the kernel via cold idle paths after instrumented functions place poison, allowing subsequent calls to hit poisoned regions and produce false-positive out-of-bounds reports or crashes.

Why it matters to the business

ARM-based Linux systems may generate spurious kernel memory error reports during normal idle/wake cycles, increasing debugging effort and risking unnecessary service restarts or perceived instability.

How an attack unfolds

No attacker-controlled exploitation path exists; the condition is triggered internally when an ARM CPU enters cpuidle, loses context, and resumes through a cold path that never removes poison placed by KASAN-instrumented functions on the idle stack.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix present in commit 20ac71bee028ffbae4fc14ed679b23b4d3e95726; rebuild and deploy the updated kernel on all ARM systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the commit is present in the running kernel, then exercise cpuidle transitions under KASAN and verify absence of stale stack poison reports in dmesg.

Typical attack path

  1. CPU enters cpuidle on ARM kernel with KASAN_STACK enabled
  2. Instrumented functions poison stack shadow before kernel exit
  3. CPU loses context and resumes via cold path
  4. Stale poison remains in stack shadow
  5. Next instrumented function triggers KASAN report on access to previously valid stack frame

How to detect it

Search kernel logs (dmesg, journalctl) for KASAN BUG reports referencing refresh_cpu_vm_stats or tick_nohz_idle_stop_tick on ARM hardware; correlate with CPU idle entry/exit timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching ARM Linux kernels that enable KASAN
  • Include the fix in all future stable and LTS kernel builds
  • Add kernel log monitoring for KASAN stack-out-of-bounds messages originating from idle paths

This patch refer to arch/arm64/kernel/sleep.S to resolve this issue. From cited commit [1] that explain the problem Functions which the compiler has instrumented for KASAN place poison on the stack shadow upon entry and remove this poison prior to returning. In the case of cpuidle, CPUs exit the kernel a number of levels deep in C code. Any instrumented functions on this critical path will leave portions of the stack shadow poisoned. If CPUs lose context and return to the kernel via a cold path, we restore a prior context saved in __cpu_suspend_enter are forgotten, and we never remove the poison they placed in the stack shadow area by functions calls between this and the actual exit of the kernel. Thus, (depending on stackframe layout) subsequent calls to instrumented functions may hit this stale poison, resulting in (spurious) KASAN splats to the console. To avoid this, clear any stale poison from the idle thread for a CPU prior to bringing a CPU online. From cited commit [2] Extend to check for CONFIG_KASAN_STACK [1] commit 0d97e6d8024c ("arm64: kasan: clear stale stack poison") [2] commit d56a9ef84bd0 ("kasan, arm64: unpoison stack only with CONFIG_KASAN_STACK")
