What it actually does
The vulnerability relaxes an overly strict socket state assertion in __inet_accept, allowing a TCP child socket created after shutdown(SEND_SHUTDOWN) on a listening socket to reach the accept path while still in FIN_WAIT1 state, producing a kernel WARNING instead of the expected state.
Why it matters to the business
Systems may experience kernel log spam, potential instability during high-volume accept workloads, and brief service disruption on affected Linux kernels; urgency is low given the absence of known in-the-wild exploitation and low EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker invokes shutdown on a socket before it enters the listening state; after the TCP deferral change, the resulting child socket reaches the accept syscall in FIN_WAIT1, triggering the assertion failure path inside __inet_accept.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit a38297e3fb012ddfa7ce0321a7e5a8daeb1872b6 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. No backports or workarounds are documented.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit a38297e3fb012ddfa7ce0321a7e5a8daeb1872b6; reproduce the original syz-executor sequence and confirm absence of the WARNING at net/ipv4/af_inet.c:761.
Typical attack path
- Create a TCP socket and call shutdown(SEND_SHUTDOWN)
- Place the socket into the listening state
- Trigger an incoming connection that produces a child socket
- Call accept on the listening socket to reach the buggy state check
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for the exact WARNING string referencing __inet_accept and net/ipv4/af_inet.c; correlate with processes performing shutdown followed immediately by accept.
- WARNING: CPU:.*__inet_accept.*net/ipv4/af_inet.c
- RIP:.*__inet_accept.*net/ipv4/af_inet.c
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all externally reachable Linux systems within standard patch windows
- Monitor kernel logs for occurrences of __inet_accept WARNING until patches are deployed
- Include this fix in the next planned kernel rollout; no emergency action required

After commit 94062790aedb ("tcp: defer shutdown(SEND_SHUTDOWN) for TCP_SYN_RECV sockets"), the above causes the child to reach the accept syscall in FIN_WAIT1 status. Eric noted we can relax the existing assertion in __inet_accept()
