What it actually does
Incorrect dev_tracker reference handling in AX25 socket bind leads to use-after-free when network device detaches, because the tracker of ax25_cb is not properly deallocated in ax25_kill_by_device.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or memory corruption possible on systems using AX25 protocol stacks, which may disrupt specialized networking configurations with low overall prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access binds an AX25 socket, then triggers network device detachment or hangup events that mismatch the dev_tracker allocation and free paths, resulting in refcount warnings and use-after-free.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be or later that corrects the dev_tracker assignment in ax25_kill_by_device.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel version includes the referenced commit, reproduce device detach scenarios while monitoring for ref_tracker warnings in dmesg, and confirm absence of double-free or reference-already-released messages.
Typical attack path
- Bind AX25 socket via ax25_bind() allocating dev_tracker
- Trigger device detachment or tty hangup events
- ax25_device_event or ax25_kill_by_device frees incorrect tracker
- Subsequent reference operations trigger use-after-free
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for ref_tracker messages mentioning ax25_bind, ax25_device_event, or reference already released patterns during device detach or tty hangup events.
- ref_tracker: reference already released
- ax25_bind+0x424
- ax25_dev_device_up+0x105
- ax25_kill_by_device
- WARNING:.*ref_tracker_free
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel patch containing commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be on all systems exposing AX25 interfaces
- Monitor kernel logs for ref_tracker warnings involving ax25_bind and ax25_device_event
- Disable AX25 protocol support if not required for operations
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ax25: Fix netdev refcount issue The dev_tracker is added to ax25_cb in ax25_bind(). When the ax25 device is detaching, the dev_tracker of ax25_cb should be deallocated in ax25_kill_by_device() instead of the dev_tracker of ax25_dev.
