What it actually does
The i40e driver allocates its service workqueue with the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag while dependent drivers such as irdma do not, violating workqueue flush dependency rules and triggering warnings in check_flush_dependency during device teardown or SRIOV operations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using Intel Ethernet controllers with RDMA or SRIOV may experience repeated kernel warnings, reduced stability during driver load/unload cycles, and potential interference with high-performance networking workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access loads the i40e and irdma modules, triggers netdev close events that cause i40e_service_task to flush the incompatible workqueue, and observes or amplifies the resulting warning path; no remote or privilege-escalation exploitation is known.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 09b54d29f05129b092f7c793a70b689ffb3c7b2c which removes the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag from the i40e workqueue allocation.
How to confirm the fix worked
After patching, confirm absence of the check_flush_dependency warning when loading i40e alongside irdma and exercising SRIOV or netdev close paths; verify the workqueue allocation site in the driver source.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a system with i40e hardware
- Ensure both i40e and irdma modules are loaded
- Perform SRIOV configuration or interface close operations
- Trigger i40e_service_task execution that flushes the workqueue
- Observe warning in kernel log
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for the strings 'WQ_MEM_RECLAIM i40e:i40e_service_task' and 'check_flush_dependency' around module load or interface events; examine call traces involving ib_unregister_device and i40e_notify_client_of_netdev_close.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades containing the referenced commit on systems with i40e hardware
- Monitor kernel logs for workqueue flush dependency warnings during driver testing
- Restrict unprivileged module loading where possible until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: Do not use WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag for workqueue Issue reported by customer during SRIOV testing, call trace: When both i40e and the i40iw driver are loaded, a warning in check_flush_dependency is being triggered. This seems to be because of the i40e driver workqueue is allocated with the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag, and the i40iw one is not. Similar error was encountered on ice too and it was fixed by removing the flag. Do the same for i40e too.
