What it actually does
The ACPI CPPC driver in the Linux kernel relied on bit_width for system memory accesses instead of access_width, allowing non-byte-aligned accesses that trigger SError interrupts and kernel panics during cppc_get_perf_caps and cpufreq initialization on affected platforms.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes and boot failures on Linux servers or devices using certain ARM hardware, leading to downtime and requiring kernel updates or workarounds to restore stability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access loads or initializes the cppc_cpufreq driver on vulnerable kernels, causing cppc_get_perf_caps to perform misaligned memory reads that generate fatal asynchronous SError exceptions and panic the system; no widespread remote exploitation has been observed.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 01fc53be672acae37e611c80cc0b4f3939584de3 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. If immediate patching is not feasible, avoid loading cppc_cpufreq on affected hardware.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 01fc53be672acae37e611c80cc0b4f3939584de3 via git log or kernel version string; test boot on Cobalt 100 or similar platforms and confirm absence of SError panics in cppc_get_perf_caps during cpufreq initialization.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution context on a target Linux system
- Trigger cpufreq_online or cppc_cpufreq_init during device enumeration or module load
- Invoke cppc_get_perf_caps which performs unaligned access_width-violating reads
- Induce SError interrupt leading to kernel panic and denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg for SError interrupts, arm64_serror_panic traces, and cppc_get_perf_caps call stacks around systemd-udevd or cpufreq init; correlate with unpatched kernel versions on affected ARM platforms.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Linux systems using ACPI CPPC and cpufreq
- Monitor boot logs for SError or cppc_get_perf_caps panics until patched
- Apply the fix within standard maintenance windows given low EPSS and no KEV status
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: CPPC: Use access_width over bit_width for system memory accesses To align with ACPI 6.3+, since bit_width can be any 8-bit value, it cannot be depended on to be always on a clean 8b boundary. This was uncovered on the Cobalt 100 platform. Make sure to add a check for system memory since pcc redefines the access_width to subspace id. If access_width is not set, then fall back to using bit_width.
