What it actually does

Missing acquisition of chan->lock or chan->vchan.lock in multiple code paths inside the xilinx_dpdma driver allows concurrent access to channel state, producing lockdep warnings and potential use-after-free or corruption during DMA descriptor queuing and transfer issuance.

Why it matters to the business

Systems relying on Xilinx ZynqMP DPDMA for display or video DMA may experience kernel warnings, instability, or crashes during framebuffer initialization or plane updates, disrupting embedded or FPGA-based Linux deployments until the kernel is updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local code execution triggers the race by performing concurrent DMA operations or framebuffer configuration changes that call xilinx_dpdma_chan_queue_transfer and xilinx_dpdma_issue_pending without the required locks, leading to the observed lockdep splat and possible denial of service.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix contained in commit fcdd5bb4a8c81c64c1334d7e0aba41a8829a24de to the xilinx_dpdma driver; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel on all affected devices. Where live patching is unavailable, schedule a maintenance window to replace the running kernel image.

How to confirm the fix worked

Boot the patched kernel and confirm the lockdep warning no longer appears during drm_fbdev_dma_setup and zynqmp_dpsub_probe; additionally verify the presence of the corrected spin_lock calls at the sites previously reported by lockdep in xilinx_dpdma.c.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local user or kernel context on an affected ZynqMP platform
  2. Trigger deferred probe or framebuffer registration that exercises drm_fbdev_dma_setup
  3. Issue concurrent atomic commits or plane updates that reach xilinx_dpdma_issue_pending
  4. Cause the unprotected queue_transfer path to race with another thread holding partial state
  5. Observe lockdep warning or subsequent kernel instability

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the exact lockdep warning mentioning xilinx_dpdma_chan_queue_transfer, the call trace through zynqmp_disp_layer_update and drm_fb_helper, or any Oops involving the same driver functions on boot or during console takeover.

What your security team should do

  • Identify all Linux instances running kernels prior to fcdd5bb4a8c81c64c1334d7e0aba41a8829a24de on Xilinx ZynqMP hardware
  • Prioritize patching of production embedded or display subsystems within normal change windows
  • Add kernel lockdep and oops monitoring for xilinx_dpdma symbols to existing observability pipelines
  • Document hardware models that include the DPDMA controller for future vulnerability triage
