A timing flaw in the Linux kernel's network address handling can let a local user crash the system when IPv6 addresses are added and removed at the same time.

What it actually does
Race condition in ipv6_get_ifaddr and ipv6_del_addr allows hlist_for_each_entry_rcu to return an entry whose refcount has reached zero; subsequent in6_ifa_hold then triggers use-after-free after RCU grace period expires.
Why it matters to the business
Local users or processes can trigger kernel warnings, potential crashes, or memory corruption on IPv6-enabled Linux systems, leading to denial of service for network-dependent workloads and requiring urgent patching across server fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access issues concurrent IPv6 address operations so that ipv6_del_addr removes the entry and drops its refcount to zero while ipv6_get_ifaddr still holds a pointer; the freed object is then accessed, producing the observed refcount warning and possible further corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit b4b3b69a19016d4e7fbdbd1dbcc184915eb862e1; rebuild and reboot all affected systems; verify the fix is present by checking git describe or kernel build identifiers.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patched commit appears in the running kernel source; run reproducer scripts that exercise ipv6_get_ifaddr concurrently with address deletion and verify absence of refcount_warn_saturate messages.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution or shell on target Linux host
- Trigger parallel calls to inet6 address retrieval and deletion routines via netlink or socket APIs
- Win the race so that refcount reaches zero before in6_ifa_hold_safe check
- Observe or exploit resulting use-after-free in kernel context
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for refcount_t addition on zero warnings originating from ipv6_get_ifaddr or inet6_rtm_getaddr; inspect netlink message traces and RCU-related call stacks for concurrent address list modifications.
- refcount_t: addition on 0; use-after-free
- WARNING: CPU:.*PID:.*at lib/refcount.c:25 refcount_warn_saturate
- ipv6_get_ifaddr+0xda/0xe0
- inet6_rtm_getaddr+0x342/0x3f0
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all IPv6-enabled production hosts within the next maintenance window
- Add the fixed commit hash to automated kernel version scanning policies
- Review and restrict local access paths that could be used to trigger the race
- Monitor kernel logs for refcount warnings until patching is complete
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: fix race condition between ipv6_get_ifaddr and ipv6_del_addr Although ipv6_get_ifaddr walks inet6_addr_lst under the RCU lock, it still means hlist_for_each_entry_rcu can return an item that got removed from the list. The memory itself of such item is not freed thanks to RCU but nothing guarantees the actual content of the memory is sane. In particular, the reference count can be zero. This can happen if ipv6_del_addr is called in parallel. ipv6_del_addr removes the entry from inet6_addr_lst (hlist_del_init_rcu(&ifp->addr_lst)) and drops all references (__in6_ifa_put(ifp) + in6_ifa_put(ifp)). With bad enough timing, this can happen: 1. In ipv6_get_ifaddr, hlist_for_each_entry_rcu returns an entry. 2. Then, the whole ipv6_del_addr is executed for the given entry. The reference count drops to zero and kfree_rcu is scheduled. 3. ipv6_get_ifaddr continues and tries to increments the reference count (in6_ifa_hold). 4. The rcu is unlocked and the entry is freed. 5. The freed entry is returned. Prevent increasing of the reference count in such case. The name in6_ifa_hold_safe is chosen to mimic the existing fib6_info_hold_safe. [ 41.506330] refcount_t: addition on 0; use-after-free.
