What it actually does
Incorrect framebuffer reference count management during non-blocking atomic commits in the vc4 DRM driver allows refcount underflow, resulting in a use-after-free condition on buffer objects.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel warnings, potential system instability or crashes on Raspberry Pi devices running graphics workloads, with low but non-zero risk of local code execution if the flaw is leveraged.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers repeated non-blocking DRM plane commits (for example via media or UI applications) that cause mismatched prepare_fb and cleanup_fb calls; the resulting refcount imbalance leads to premature buffer free and subsequent use of the freed object.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 48bfb4b03c5ff6e1fa1dc73fb915e150b0968c40 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Disable non-blocking commits if immediate patching is impossible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 48bfb4b03c5ff6e1fa1dc73fb915e150b0968c40 via git log or uname; reproduce the original warning scenario and verify absence of refcount warnings; inspect drm_atomic_helper_cleanup_planes calls for correct new-plane-state usage.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on an affected Linux system
- Execute or coerce a process to perform non-blocking atomic DRM commits involving vc4 planes
- Trigger repeated prepare_fb without matching cleanup_fb due to direct .state access
- Cause refcount underflow and use-after-free on the buffer object
- Leverage the freed object for memory corruption or privilege escalation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for 'refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free' and vc4_bo_dec_usecnt stack traces; correlate with processes performing DRM ioctls such as drm_mode_atomic_ioctl; examine audit logs for unusual graphics-related system calls.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all Raspberry Pi and vc4-based systems within normal patch windows
- Monitor for refcount warnings in dmesg on graphics workloads
- Restrict untrusted local users from performing DRM operations until patched

This means that sometimes we can increase the refcount in `prepare_fb` and don't decrease it in `cleanup_fb`. The opposite can also be true. In fact, the struct drm_plane .state shouldn't be accessed directly but instead, the `drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()` helper function should be used. So, we could stick to this check, but using `drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()`. But actually, this check is not re ---truncated---
