What it actually does

Unaligned 64-bit register accesses in the t7xx WWAN driver trigger kernel alignment faults on 64-bit platforms, resulting in data abort exceptions and kernel oops during module initialization or FSM operations.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected Linux kernels with MediaTek T7xx 5G modems may experience unexpected kernel crashes and reboots, disrupting network connectivity and requiring reboots or kernel updates; low exploitability reduces immediate ransomware risk but still affects device stability in embedded and Android-derived environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger WWAN module load/unload (such as through modem events or crafted network conditions) causes execution of t7xx_cldma_hw_set_start_addr which performs a misaligned 64-bit store, producing an alignment fault and kernel panic; no public in-the-wild exploitation is recorded beyond generic Android kernel RCE references.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to the commit beaf0e7996b79e06ccc2bdcb4442fbaeccc31200 or later stable releases that include io-64-nonatomic-lo-hi.h usage and 32-bit access pairs for the t7xx driver; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image on affected devices.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit beaf0e7996b79e06ccc2bdcb4442fbaeccc31200, verify absence of alignment faults in dmesg when loading mtk_t7xx, and test modem initialization on 64-bit hardware.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local code execution or trigger WWAN driver load
  2. Invoke t7xx_fsm_uninit or equivalent path that calls t7xx_cldma_hw_set_start_addr
  3. Trigger 64-bit write to a 32-bit-aligned register address
  4. Induce kernel alignment fault and panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for "alignment fault", "Unable to handle kernel paging request", and stack traces containing t7xx_cldma_hw_set_start_addr or t7xx_fsm_uninit; examine crash dumps for ESR 0x96000061 and the mtk_t7xx module.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all 64-bit systems using MediaTek T7xx WWAN hardware
  • Monitor kernel logs for alignment fault signatures during driver initialization
  • Apply the fix before enabling untrusted modem or USB WWAN devices
