What it actually does

Path traversal in the network server allows unauthenticated attackers to overwrite arbitrary files on the host by supplying a crafted ROM payload containing directory traversal sequences.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can corrupt or replace critical configuration, data, or executable files on any exposed server instance, resulting in service disruption, data loss, or full system compromise without requiring credentials.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to the exposed network server and transmits a specially crafted ROM file whose filename contains path traversal sequences such as ../, causing the server to write attacker-controlled content to any location on the filesystem.

How to fix it

Upgrade fceux to a version that resolves the path traversal flaw in the network server component; if no official fixed release is available, disable the network server or restrict access via firewall rules until a patch can be applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the server rejects or sanitizes filenames containing traversal sequences such as .. or / before writing; review server logs for rejected connection attempts after applying updates.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate an internet-exposed fceux network server instance
  2. Craft a ROM payload containing directory traversal sequences in the filename
  3. Transmit the payload to the server without authentication
  4. Verify successful overwrite of target files on the server filesystem

How to detect it

Review server logs for connections followed by file write operations using paths containing .. or unusual ROM filenames; inspect filesystem timestamps for unexpected modifications to configuration or binary files after server activity.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately disable the network server feature if not required
  • Apply available updates to fceux once released
  • Place the server behind a network access control list or VPN
  • Monitor for unexpected file modifications on hosts running the affected version

The record

The network server of fceux 2.7.0 has a path traversal vulnerability, allowing attackers to overwrite any files on the server without authentication by fake ROM.
