What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow triggered during decompression in the ndlz8_decompress function when processing crafted input data.
Why it matters to the business
Applications relying on c-blosc2 for data compression may crash or allow arbitrary code execution when handling untrusted remote input, risking service disruption and data integrity across dependent systems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts malicious compressed data and sends it to a target application using the vulnerable c-blosc2 library; the ndlz8_decompress routine fails to validate bounds, leading to a heap overflow that can be leveraged for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade c-blosc2 to version 2.14.3 or later; apply commit cfaa9c72f25566f630c5f3d32ac9321372c6c93f in source builds; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed version is at least 2.14.3 via package metadata or source; run regression tests exercising ndlz8 decompression paths with boundary inputs; monitor for crashes or unexpected behavior during decompression.
Typical attack path
- Identify remote service or endpoint accepting c-blosc2 compressed payloads
- Generate and transmit specially malformed ndlz8 data to trigger overflow
- Overwrite heap memory structures to redirect execution flow
- Achieve code execution or denial of service on the target process
How to detect it
Review application logs for segmentation faults or abnormal exits during decompression; inspect network traffic or file inputs containing ndlz8 compressed blocks for anomalous sizes; correlate with process crash dumps showing heap corruption near ndlz8x8.c.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade all instances of c-blosc2 to the fixed version
- Inventory and rebuild downstream packages that statically link the library
- Implement input validation or sandboxing around decompression routines until patched
- Monitor vulnerability feeds for any increase in exploit maturity
The record
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in c-blosc2 up to 2.13.2. Affected is the function ndlz8_decompress of the file /src/c-blosc2/plugins/codecs/ndlz/ndlz8x8.c. The manipulation leads to heap-based buffer overflow. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. Upgrading to version 2.14.3 is able to address this issue. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component. VDB-259050 is the identifier assigned to this vulnerability.
