What it actually does
Uninitialized state in p2putil.c when advertised service information parsing fails leads to daemon crash or undefined behavior.
Why it matters to the business
Wireless management daemon becomes unavailable, disrupting network connectivity and device management on affected systems until restart or patch.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends malformed service advertisement data over the wireless interface; the daemon attempts to parse it, hits the initialization flaw, and crashes or enters an unstable state.
How to fix it
Upgrade iNet wireless daemon (IWD) to a version newer than 2.15 as soon as it becomes available from the distribution or upstream project; restart the daemon after upgrade and monitor for stability.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed IWD version is newer than 2.15, review release notes for the parsing fix, and test that malformed service advertisements no longer cause crashes.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems running vulnerable IWD versions
- Craft malformed Wi-Fi service advertisement frames
- Transmit frames to trigger parsing failure
- Observe daemon crash or continued impact
How to detect it
Review system logs for IWD daemon crashes or segmentation faults coinciding with wireless activity; correlate with unusual service advertisement traffic on monitored interfaces.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching IWD on all wireless-enabled systems once a fixed release is published
- Monitor upstream and distribution advisories for the availability of version > 2.15
- Temporarily restrict exposure of wireless interfaces if immediate patching is not feasible
The record
p2putil.c in iNet wireless daemon (IWD) through 2.15 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact because of initialization issues in situations where parsing of advertised service information fails.
