What it actually does
Use-after-free in sun8i-ce crypto driver where sun8i_ce_cipher_unprepare is invoked after crypto_finalize_skcipher_request, allowing client callbacks to free memory that is subsequently accessed during unprepare, resulting in NULL pointer dereference or slab-use-after-free.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or instability on systems using the sun8i-ce driver, leading to denial of service and potential data corruption during crypto operations; low exploitation likelihood but requires prompt patching on affected Linux kernels to maintain system availability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers cryptographic self-tests or skcipher operations on hardware using the sun8i-ce driver; the request finalization frees memory via client callback before the unprepare routine accesses the now-freed structure, causing a dereference fault. The issue was originally masked by crypto engine handling and surfaces primarily during testing or specific cipher workloads.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing commit dc60b25540c82fc4baa95d1458ae96ead21859e0 which reorders the unprepare call before finalize; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image on all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of commit dc60b25540c82fc4baa95d1458ae96ead21859e0 in the running kernel source; re-run crypto self-tests with KASAN enabled and verify absence of use-after-free reports in sun8i_ce_cipher_do_one.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target system running an affected Linux kernel with sun8i-ce hardware crypto enabled
- Trigger alg_test_skcipher or equivalent crypto request that exercises prepare/unprepare callbacks
- Cause client callback to free request memory immediately after finalize
- Execute sun8i_ce_cipher_unprepare which dereferences the freed memory
- Induce kernel oops or KASAN-detected use-after-free
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs and dmesg for Oops messages referencing sun8i_ce_cipher_do_one, KASAN reports mentioning slab-use-after-free at addresses inside kmalloc-256, or crashes during alg_test_skcipher; correlate with crypto_pump_work call stacks.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit on all devices using sun8i-ce
- Monitor kernel logs for NULL pointer dereference or KASAN slab-use-after-free in sun8i_ce during crypto workloads
- Disable sun8i-ce driver if hardware crypto is non-essential until patched
- Include the fixed commit in automated kernel build and deployment pipelines
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: sun8i-ce - Fix use after free in unprepare sun8i_ce_cipher_unprepare should be called before crypto_finalize_skcipher_request, because client callbacks may immediately free memory, that isn't needed anymore. But it will be used by unprepare after free. Before removing prepare/unprepare callbacks it was handled by crypto engine in crypto_finalize_request. Usually that results in a pointer dereference problem during a in crypto selftest.
