What it actually does
The flaw permits cloned packets directed to taps on a bridge device in promisc mode to reach the br_netfilter input hook, causing confirmation of an invalid conntrack object and triggering kernel warnings or potential instability due to improper input validation of packet state.
Why it matters to the business
Affected Linux systems may experience kernel warnings, instability, or crashes in networking components when using bridge devices in promisc mode, potentially leading to service disruptions; low urgency given absence from KEV and static low EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker triggers packet cloning on a promisc-mode bridge so that packets follow the bridge input hook path, reaching br_netfilter without conntrack reset and allowing exploitation of the resulting invalid state for privilege escalation or denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version such as 5.15.157 or apply commit dceb683ab87ca3666a9bb5c0158528b646faedc4; apply equivalent fixes for any affected downstream packages.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version is at or above a fixed release, inspect source for the bit annotation change in BR_INPUT_SKB_CB and the skip logic in br_nf_local_in, and confirm absence of the referenced warning splat under promisc bridge traffic.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on an affected Linux system
- Place a bridge interface into promiscuous mode
- Generate or forward packets that are cloned to taps
- Force the packets through the br_netfilter input hook
- Trigger invalid conntrack handling leading to warning or crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for WARNING entries referencing br_nf_local_in and br_netfilter_hooks.c:616; correlate with bridge interface configuration changes and packet receive paths.
- br_nf_local_in+0x157/0x180 [br_netfilter]
- WARNING: CPU: .* PID: .* at net/bridge/br_netfilter_hooks.c:616
- br_nf_local_in+0x157/0x180
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on systems using bridge interfaces
- Review and apply the listed fixed commits where source builds are used
- Monitor kernel logs for br_netfilter warnings as an exposure indicator
- Limit promiscuous mode usage to only necessary interfaces
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: br_netfilter: skip conntrack input hook for promisc packets For historical reasons, when bridge device is in promisc mode, packets that are directed to the taps follow bridge input hook path. This patch adds a workaround to reset conntrack for these packets. Jianbo Liu reports warning splats in their test infrastructure where cloned packets reach the br_netfilter input hook to confirm the conntrack object. Scratch one bit from BR_INPUT_SKB_CB to annotate that this packet has reached the input hook because it is passed up to the bridge device to reach the taps.
