What it actually does
Use-after-free during wilc_netdev_cleanup when traversing the vif list after a netdevice is unregistered and freed via needs_free_netdev, allowing read of a dangling pointer.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers on affected Linux systems can trigger kernel crashes or memory corruption, leading to denial of service or potential privilege escalation on devices using the wilc1000 wifi driver.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers interface registration failure, module removal, or device unbind (e.g., via sysfs unbind), causing the cleanup loop to access a vif pointer that was freed when the associated netdevice was released.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 5956f4203b6cdd0755bbdd21b45f3933c7026208 or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image on affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the listed fix commit; attempt module unbind or interface error paths under KASAN to confirm absence of slab-use-after-free reports.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or code execution on target system
- Trigger wilc1000 interface error path or unbind/remove module
- wilc_netdev_cleanup traverses vif list after netdevice free
- Read of freed memory occurs, potentially leading to crash or corruption
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for KASAN reports mentioning wilc_netdev_cleanup or slab-use-after-free during module unload or spi device removal; review audit logs for unbind operations on wilc1000_spi.
- wilc_netdev_cleanup+0x508/0x5cc
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in wilc_netdev_cleanup
- wilc_bus_remove+0xc8/0xec
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing the wilc1000 driver
- Restrict local unprivileged access where possible until patched
- Monitor for kernel oops or KASAN warnings referencing wilc_netdev_cleanup

When unregistering a net device, since the needs_free_netdev has been set to true during registration, the netdevice object is also freed, and as a consequence, the corresponding vif object too, since it is attached to it as private netdevice data. The next occurrence of the loop then tries to access freed vif pointer to the list to move forward in the list. Fix this use-after-free thanks to two mechanisms: - navigate in the list with list_for_each_entry_safe, which allows to safely modify the list as we go through each element. For each element, remove it from the list with list_del_rcu - make sure to wait for RCU grace period end after each vif removal to make sure it is safe to free the corresponding vif too (through unregister_netdev) Since we are in a RCU "modifier" path (not a "reader" path), and because such path is expected not to be concurrent to any other modifier (we are using the vif_mutex lock), we do not need to use RCU list API, that's why we can benefit from list_for_each_entry_safe.
