What it actually does

Deadlock in hisi_sas driver from circular semaphore dependency: disabling PHY takes hisi_hba lock then triggers internal abort that times out on ECC error, invoking automatic dump which also requires the same lock, blocking controller reset and device revalidation.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected Hisilicon SAS controllers can experience prolonged hangs and unrecoverable controller states under concurrent offline and ECC events, causing storage I/O stalls and requiring manual intervention or reboot; low urgency given age and lack of KEV or ransomware use.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or ability to induce PHY disable and ECC errors can trigger the race; the kernel workqueues for domain revalidation and reset handlers deadlock on the shared semaphore preventing dump or abort completion.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix from commit a47f0b03149af538af4442ff0702eac430ace1cb in the Linux kernel stable tree; rebuild and deploy updated kernel packages containing this change to all affected systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the commit a47f0b03149af538af4442ff0702eac430ace1cb (or equivalent backport) is present in the running kernel source; reproduce PHY disable plus ECC scenarios in a test environment and confirm absence of hung-task traces involving hisi_sas_internal_abort_timeout.

Typical attack path

  1. Issue PHY disable command causing attached device offline notification
  2. Simultaneously trigger 2-bit ECC error on controller
  3. Internal abort times out and requests automatic dump
  4. Dump handler blocks waiting for semaphore already held by abort path
  5. Reset work item also blocks, leaving controller unresponsive

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for repeated hung-task warnings referencing kworker threads blocked in hisi_sas_internal_abort_timeout, hisi_sas_controller_prereset, or sas_revalidate_domain; correlate with sas_port_event_worker and 0000:74:02.0 workqueue activity.

  • hisi_sas_internal_abort_timeout
  • hisi_sas_controller_prereset
  • INFO: task kworker.*blocked for more than 120 seconds
  • sas_revalidate_domain
  • hisi_sas_rst_work_handler

What your security team should do

  • Patch all Linux hosts using hisi_sas hardware to the fixed commit immediately
  • Add kernel hung-task and workqueue stall alerts to monitoring
  • Review storage controller firmware for ECC handling improvements
  • Schedule controlled failover testing after upgrade

However, the internal abort timed out due to the 2 bit ECC error and triggers automatic dump. In addition, since the hisi_hba semaphore has been obtained, the dump cannot be executed and the controller cannot be reset. Therefore, the deadlocks occur on the following circular dependencies ---truncated---
