What it actually does
The refactoring in the comedi_8255 driver left the io callback pointer in struct subdev_8255_private uninitialized (NULL) after calling __subdev_8255_init, so subsequent dereference during subdevice setup triggers a kernel NULL pointer dereference.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using data acquisition cards that rely on the comedi 8255 driver experience kernel crashes on module load or device probe, causing unplanned downtime and potential loss of hardware functionality until the kernel is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to load the comedi_8255 module or trigger PCI device enumeration for a supported 8255 card causes the driver to call __subdev_8255_init, which dereferences the unset io pointer and crashes the kernel; no remote unauthenticated path exists and no threat actors have been observed exploiting it.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4a825457a45d8debc46ab8cba57d47462411710d or later; rebuild and install any out-of-tree comedi modules after the update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 4a825457a45d8debc46ab8cba57d47462411710d via git log or kernel version string; attempt to load the 8255_pci module with supported hardware and confirm no NULL dereference occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or ability to insert compatible 8255 hardware
- Trigger comedi_pci_driver_register or pci_8255_auto_attach
- Driver calls __subdev_8255_init which leaves spriv->io as NULL
- Later indirect call through the NULL pointer produces kernel oops and panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for the strings "comedi_8255", "__subdev_8255_init", and "NULL pointer dereference" occurring during pci_device_probe or driver initialization; correlate with presence of 8255_pci or comedi modules in lsmod output.
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference
- __subdev_8255_init+0x79
- pci_8255_auto_attach
- comedi_8255
- 8255_pci
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on any host that loads comedi or 8255_pci modules
- Restrict loading of comedi drivers to systems that actually require the hardware
- Monitor for kernel oops reports containing comedi_8255 symbols until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: comedi: comedi_8255: Correct error in subdevice initialization The refactoring done in commit 5c57b1ccecc7 ("comedi: comedi_8255: Rework subdevice initialization functions") to the initialization of the io field of struct subdev_8255_private broke all cards using the drivers/comedi/drivers/comedi_8255.c module. Prior to 5c57b1ccecc7, __subdev_8255_init() initialized the io field in the newly allocated struct subdev_8255_private to the non-NULL callback given to the function, otherwise it used a flag parameter to select between subdev_8255_mmio and subdev_8255_io. The refactoring removed that logic and the flag, as subdev_8255_mm_init() and subdev_8255_io_init() now explicitly pass subdev_8255_mmio and subdev_8255_io respectively to __subdev_8255_init(), only __subdev_8255_init() never sets spriv->io to the supplied callback. That spriv->io is NULL leads to a later BUG: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000 PGD 0 P4D 0 Oops: 0010 [#1] SMP PTI CPU: 1 PID: 1210 Comm: systemd-udevd Not tainted 6.7.3-x86_64 #1 Hardware name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX RIP: 0010:0x0 Code: Unable to access opcode bytes at 0xffffffffffffffd6.
