What it actually does
Use-after-free in reqsk_timer_handler() when a per-netns RDS TCP kernel listener's request socket timer fires after the network namespace has been dismantled because kernel sockets do not hold a reference that protects the netns until all timers expire.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected Linux kernels that use the RDS protocol over TCP can experience kernel crashes, memory corruption, or potential local privilege escalation when network namespaces are created and torn down, leading to denial of service or compromised host integrity; widespread impact due to Linux kernel prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access creates a new network namespace, opens an RDS TCP socket and connects to the RDS_TCP_PORT listener (creating a request socket), then exits the process or unshares namespaces; the namespace teardown occurs before the request socket timer expires, triggering the use-after-free when the timer handler runs on the now-freed netns object.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 9905a157048f441f1412e7bd13372f4a971d75c6 which applies the inet_twsk_purge cleanup for the global ehash; rebuild and reboot all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of commit 9905a157048f441f1412e7bd13372f4a971d75c6 in the running kernel source or check /proc/version and kernel package version against the fixed release; attempt namespace unshare + RDS connect sequences under KASAN to confirm absence of UAF splats.
Typical attack path
- unshare(CLONE_NEWNET) to create isolated namespace and initialize RDS TCP listener
- create inet6_mptcp or RDS TCP socket and connect to RDS_TCP_PORT (0x4001)
- exit process or tear down namespace while request socket timer is pending
- reqsk timer fires in softirq context after netns has been freed
- use-after-free occurs during inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop or refcount operations
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for ref_tracker warnings mentioning netns and rds_tcp_listen_init, KASAN use-after-free reports in inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop or reqsk_timer_handler, and any unshare or RDS TCP connect sequences preceding crashes.
- ref_tracker: net notrefcnt@
- rds_tcp_listen_init
- inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop
- reqsk_timer_handler
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free
What your security team should do
- Immediately identify and patch all production kernels using RDS over TCP
- Prioritize systems that allow unprivileged namespace creation (unshare)
- Monitor for kernel oops or KASAN warnings involving ref_tracker and inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop
- Consider disabling RDS TCP if not required until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rds: tcp: Fix use-after-free of net in reqsk_timer_handler(). syzkaller reported a warning of netns tracker [0] followed by KASAN splat [1] and another ref tracker warning [1]. syzkaller could not find a repro, but in the log, the only suspicious sequence was as follows: 18:26:22 executing program 1: r0 = socket$inet6_mptcp(0xa, 0x1, 0x106) ... connect$inet6(r0, &(0x7f0000000080)={0xa, 0x4001, 0x0, @loopback}, 0x1c) (async) The notable thing here is 0x4001 in connect(), which is RDS_TCP_PORT. So, the scenario would be: 1. unshare(CLONE_NEWNET) creates a per netns tcp listener in rds_tcp_listen_init(). 2. syz-executor connect()s to it and creates a reqsk. 3. syz-executor exit()s immediately. 4. netns is dismantled. [0] 5. reqsk timer is fired, and UAF happens while freeing reqsk. [1] 6. listener is freed after RCU grace period. [2] Basically, reqsk assumes that the listener guarantees netns safety until all reqsk timers are expired by holding the listener's refcount. However, this was not the case for kernel sockets. Commit 740ea3c4a0b2 ("tcp: Clean up kernel listener's reqsk in inet_twsk_purge()") fixed this issue only for per-netns ehash. Let's apply the same fix for the global ehash.
