What it actually does

The pf->dplls.lock mutex is used before initialization in ice_dpll_init, causing undefined mutex state and kernel warnings or crashes under debug mutex configurations during DPLL setup for the ice driver.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected Intel network hardware may experience boot failures, driver load errors, or availability loss, increasing downtime risk especially in environments with high device prevalence.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers driver probe or ice_load during system initialization or module insertion, causing the uninitialized mutex to be acquired in ice_dpll_lock_status_get and subsequent dpll registration paths, leading to warnings or instability.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit db29ceff3e25c48907016da456a7cbee6310fd83 which moves mutex initialization to the start of ice_dpll_init and ensures proper destroy ordering in deinit.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the fix by verifying the mutex initialization occurs at the beginning of ice_dpll_init and that no DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON warnings appear during ice_probe or ice_load on systems with CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES enabled.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local access to a system with the vulnerable ice driver loaded
  2. Trigger device probe or module load via hardware insertion or explicit modprobe
  3. ice_dpll_init executes and attempts to use pf->dplls.lock before its initialization
  4. Mutex operations in dpll_device_get_one and related functions hit the uninitialized lock
  5. Kernel logs warnings or panics under debug configurations, impacting availability

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON warnings referencing __mutex_lock and ice_dpll_lock_status_get during workqueue or probe events; inspect dmesg or journalctl for ice module load traces around the time of the warning.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates containing the referenced commit on all systems using the ice driver
  • Monitor for mutex-related warnings in kernel logs during driver initialization
  • Test driver load and network bring-up in staging environments before production rollout
  • Disable the ice driver if hardware is non-essential until patched

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: fix uninitialized dplls mutex usage The pf->dplls.lock mutex is initialized too late, after its first use. Move it to the top of ice_dpll_init. Note that the "err_exit" error path destroys the mutex. And the mutex is the last thing destroyed in ice_dpll_deinit.
