Cloudanix analysis
A small tool used for checking real-time performance on Linux systems had a minor risk of reading too much data from a file, which developers have now corrected by making a storage area slightly larger.

What it actually does
Potential buffer overflow in fscanf parsing of mount information where a 1024-byte buffer may receive up to 1025 bytes of input from /proc or /etc/mtab-style files.
Why it matters to the business
Low operational risk given absent exploitation and minimal adoption of the affected rtla tooling; unpatched builds may trigger crashes or undefined behavior during mount enumeration on systems using the vulnerable Linux kernel tree.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to control or tamper with mount table contents fed to rtla would supply an overly long mount-point string, overflowing the undersized buffer during fscanf and potentially corrupting adjacent stack memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Linux kernel trees to commit 8a585914c266dc044f53b5c83c170f79b45fcf9a or later; for mujs packages on Debian 11/12/13 apply the listed fixed versions (1.1.0-1+deb11u2 or 1.2.0-3) and rebuild any dependent tooling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Recompile with clang under -Wfortify-source and confirm the warning is absent; run rtla commands against systems with long mount-point names and verify no crashes or sanitizer reports occur.
Typical attack path
- Identify a system running an unpatched build of rtla from the affected kernel tree
- Manipulate mount-point entries visible to the process (via /proc/mounts or equivalent)
- Trigger rtla execution that invokes the vulnerable fscanf loop in utils.c
- Supply a mount-point string of 1025 or more bytes to overflow the buffer
- Achieve memory corruption leading to crash or limited code execution
How to detect it
Review build logs for the original clang -Wfortify-source warning; inspect runtime logs or core dumps from rtla for signs of fscanf-related buffer issues; no post-exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or Debian package updates within normal patch cycles
- Scan build pipelines for any custom rtla builds and enforce the MAX_PATH+1 buffer size
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates; no immediate action required given current scores and absence from known campaigns
