What it actually does
Incorrect length calculation using skb->end instead of skb->len in netlink_to_full_skb causes skb_put_data to copy uninitialized tailroom memory from a newly allocated skb, resulting in kernel-infoleak-after-free when the data reaches userspace via skb_copy_datagram_iter and packet_recvmsg.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers on affected Linux systems may obtain fragments of kernel memory containing sensitive information, raising the risk of credential exposure or further attacks on servers and endpoints that rely on netlink or packet sockets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers netlink unicast or packet socket paths that allocate an skb with uninitialized tailroom; the buggy netlink_to_full_skb copies the full buffer length including that tailroom, and a subsequent recvmsg call leaks the uninitialized bytes to user space.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit 1860e379875dfe7271c649058aeddffe5afd9d0d or any later mainline or distribution release that replaces the length argument with skb->len in netlink_to_full_skb.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of the corrected length calculation in net/netlink/af_netlink.c and confirm absence of KMSAN reports for uninit-value access in __skb_datagram_iter on patched kernels.
Typical attack path
- Local process opens netlink or AF_PACKET socket
- Sends crafted message that reaches netlink_unicast or packet_recvmsg
- Kernel creates new skb via netlink_to_full_skb using skb->end length
- Uninitialized tailroom data is stored and later copied to user buffer
- Attacker reads leaked kernel memory from the received datagram
How to detect it
Review system call audit logs and netlink/packet socket usage for unexpected recvmsg activity; correlate with any KMSAN or kernel infoleak warnings in dmesg on development or test systems.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel package updates across all Linux hosts within the next patching cycle
- Enable kernel memory sanitizers in CI and staging environments to catch similar issues
- Limit unprivileged use of netlink and packet sockets via seccomp or LSM policies where feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netlink: Fix kernel-infoleak-after-free in __skb_datagram_iter syzbot reported the following uninit-value access issue [1]: netlink_to_full_skb() creates a new `skb` and puts the `skb->data` passed as a 1st arg of netlink_to_full_skb() onto new `skb`. The data size is specified as `len` and passed to skb_put_data(). This `len` is based on `skb->end` that is not data offset but buffer offset. The `skb->end` contains data and tailroom. Since the tailroom is not initialized when the new `skb` created, KMSAN detects uninitialized memory area when copying the data. This patch resolved this issue by correct the len from `skb->end` to `skb->len`, which is the actual data offset.
