What it actually does
Missing ctr_get_width function pointer definition under CONFIG_RISCV_PMU_LEGACY=y and CONFIG_RISCV_PMU_SBI=n causes NULL dereference inside arch_perf_update_userpage during perf record on RISC-V.
Why it matters to the business
Unprivileged local users can trigger immediate kernel panic and system reboot on affected RISC-V configurations, interrupting workloads and requiring manual recovery or reboot.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local shell access invokes perf record, which calls into the uninitialized legacy PMU path and dereferences a NULL function pointer, crashing the kernel.
How to fix it
Update to the fixed commit e0d17ee872cf8d0f51cc561329b8e1a0aa792bbb or later stable kernel that properly defines ctr_get_width and removes the extra width-mask check for legacy PMU.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the ctr_get_width implementation for legacy PMU and test that perf record completes without oops on the affected config combination.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged shell on RISC-V Linux with legacy PMU config enabled
- Run perf record or any perf command that updates user page
- Kernel executes arch_perf_update_userpage which calls undefined ctr_get_width
- NULL pointer dereference occurs causing oops and panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for oops messages containing perf-exec, Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000000, and ra : arch_perf_update_userpage.
- perf-exec.*exited with irqs disabled
- Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000000
- ra : arch_perf_update_userpage+0x54/0x13e
- epc : 0000000000000000
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced commit or upgrade to a patched kernel version immediately on all RISC-V systems
- Disable CONFIG_RISCV_PMU_LEGACY if perf functionality is not required
- Monitor for kernel oops involving perf-exec and NULL dereference
