Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the Linux kernel's Btrfs filesystem can cause memory problems when snapshot creation fails, which might make the computer unstable during normal file operations.

What it actually does

Double free of an anonymous device number during Btrfs snapshot creation when a transaction commit fails after the device ID has already been freed in btrfs_get_new_fs_root or btrfs_get_root_ref, allowing the same ID to be reallocated by other kernel subsystems or filesystems.

Why it matters to the business

On systems using the Btrfs filesystem, snapshot operations that encounter commit errors can trigger memory corruption or kernel warnings, potentially leading to system instability, crashes, or data integrity issues during routine administrative tasks like creating subvolumes.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access crafts a sequence of Btrfs snapshot creation operations via ioctl that intentionally triggers a transaction commit failure after the anonymous device allocation; the error path in create_snapshot then performs a second free of the same device ID that may have been reassigned, resulting in corruption detectable via ida_free warnings.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit df0cc57e057f18e44dac8e6c18aba47ab53202f9 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; avoid Btrfs snapshot operations on unpatched systems until updated.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains the fix by checking git commit history or kernel version against df0cc57e057f18e44dac8e6c18aba47ab53202f9; attempt snapshot creation under error conditions and confirm absence of ida_free warnings in dmesg.

Typical attack path

  1. Local user invokes btrfs_mksnapshot or equivalent ioctl to create a snapshot
  2. Kernel allocates anonymous device ID and stores it in pending_snapshot
  3. Transaction commit path calls btrfs_get_new_fs_root which frees the ID due to root lookup collision
  4. Commit fails and error handling in create_snapshot performs second free of the now-reused ID
  5. Kernel triggers ida_free warning or memory corruption affecting other subsystems

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for ida_free warnings mentioning anonymous device IDs during btrfs snapshot or transaction commit paths; inspect audit logs for frequent btrfs ioctl calls leading to failures.

  • ida_free called for id=
  • btrfs_get_root_ref
  • create_pending_snapshot
  • WARNING: CPU:.*at lib/idr.c

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all Btrfs-enabled systems within standard patch cycles
  • Monitor dmesg and kernel logs for ida_free warnings related to anonymous devices
  • Restrict unprivileged snapshot creation via mount options or capabilities where feasible
  • Test snapshot workflows in staging environments after applying the fix

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix double free of anonymous device after snapshot creation failure When creating a snapshot we may do a double free of an anonymous device in case there's an error committing the transaction. The second free may result in freeing an anonymous device number that was allocated by some other subsystem in the kernel or another btrfs filesystem. The steps that lead to this: 1) At ioctl.c:create_snapshot() we allocate an anonymous device number and assign it to pending_snapshot->anon_dev; 2) Then we call btrfs_commit_transaction() and end up at transaction.c:create_pending_snapshot(); 3) There we call btrfs_get_new_fs_root() and pass it the anonymous device number stored in pending_snapshot->anon_dev; 4) btrfs_get_new_fs_root() frees that anonymous device number because btrfs_lookup_fs_root() returned a root - someone else did a lookup of the new root already, which could some task doing backref walking; 5) After that some error happens in the transaction commit path, and at ioctl.c:create_snapshot() we jump to the 'fail' label, and after that we free again the same anonymous device number, which in the meanwhile may have been reallocated somewhere else, because pending_snapshot->anon_dev still has the same value as in step 1. Recently syzbot ran into this and reported the following trace: ------------[ cut here ]------------ ida_free called for id=51 which is not allocated.
