What it actually does
The vulnerability allows a single skb with references to multiple sockets to trigger an infinite loop in unix_gc() during list_for_each_entry_safe() iteration because unix_notinflight() unlinks sockets via list_del_init(), causing the prefetched next pointer to loop on itself and hang the task.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems may experience kernel task hangs during Unix domain socket garbage collection, leading to application unresponsiveness, degraded performance, or required reboots in environments using AF_UNIX sockets; widespread kernel deployments increase exposure across servers and devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the garbage collector on Unix sockets by creating and releasing sockets with specially referenced out-of-band skbs; the flawed list traversal enters an infinite loop, hanging the task without requiring remote code execution or privilege escalation beyond local socket operations.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version such as 6.1.81 or apply the commit 36f7371de977f805750748e80279be7e370df85c in the stable repository; rebuild and reboot affected systems after patching.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version is at or above 6.1.81 or contains commit 36f7371de977f805750748e80279be7e370df85c; test socket creation and release workloads to confirm absence of hangs in GC.
Typical attack path
- Create AF_UNIX sockets with out-of-band skb references shared across multiple sockets
- Release sockets to invoke unix_release_sock and trigger garbage collection
- Force unix_gc() to enter list_for_each_entry_safe() on the oob_skb list
- Exploit list_del_init() unlinking to create a self-referential next pointer
- Cause infinite loop and task hang
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for repeated entries around unix_gc, list_for_each_entry_safe, or task hung traces involving net/unix/garbage.c; inspect for processes stuck in socket release paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all affected Linux distributions within maintenance windows
- Monitor for task hung reports related to unix_gc in system logs
- Restrict untrusted local processes from creating excessive AF_UNIX sockets if immediate patching is delayed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_unix: Fix task hung while purging oob_skb in GC. syzbot reported a task hung; at the same time, GC was looping infinitely in list_for_each_entry_safe() for OOB skb. [0] syzbot demonstrated that the list_for_each_entry_safe() was not actually safe in this case. A single skb could have references for multiple sockets. If we free such a skb in the list_for_each_entry_safe(), the current and next sockets could be unlinked in a single iteration. unix_notinflight() uses list_del_init() to unlink the socket, so the prefetched next socket forms a loop itself and list_for_each_entry_safe() never stops. Here, we must use while() and make sure we always fetch the first socket.
