What it actually does
Off-by-one error in _pad_sdma_tx_descs() causes sdma_txreq descs array overflow when an SDMA send uses exactly 6 descriptors plus dword padding, corrupting the enclosing ipoib_txreq structure and triggering a panic on send completion.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected Linux kernels may experience sudden crashes and reboots during network transmission, leading to service outages and requiring manual intervention to restore operations.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker invokes the sendmsg system call with crafted parameters that produce an SDMA transmit request requiring exactly six descriptors plus padding; the resulting overflow corrupts adjacent fields in the txreq container and causes a general protection fault when the completion handler runs.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 4.19.308 or later, or apply commit 115b7f3bc1dce590a6851a2dcf23dc1100c49790 from the stable repository; rebuild and reboot with the corrected hfi1 driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the fix by checking the version string or the presence of the corrected _pad_sdma_tx_descs expression; attempt reproduction with a six-descriptor padded sendmsg and confirm absence of panic.
Typical attack path
- Identify a host using the hfi1 IB driver with IPoIB enabled
- Craft a sendmsg call that forces an SDMA transmit of six descriptors plus dword padding
- Trigger the transmit path through hfi1_ipoib_send_dma_common
- Induce the off-by-one write into the container structure
- Observe kernel panic on hfi1_ipoib_sdma_complete
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for stack traces containing hfi1_ipoib_build_ib_tx_headers, hfi1_ipoib_send_dma_common, or ipoib_start_xmit together with general protection faults; inspect ipoib_txreq structures showing corrupted sdma_hdr pointers.
- hfi1_ipoib_build_ib_tx_headers.constprop.0+0xe1/0x2b0 [hfi1]
- general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address
- sdma_hdr = 0x400300015528b000
- num_desc = 0x0, desc_limit = 0x6
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems using the hfi1 driver within the next maintenance window
- Monitor for kernel panics containing hfi1_ipoib_build_ib_tx_headers in the stack trace
- Apply the patch and test network workloads that exercise SDMA before broad deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: IB/hfi1: Fix sdma.h tx->num_descs off-by-one error Unfortunately the commit `fd8958efe877` introduced another error causing the `descs` array to overflow. This reults in further crashes easily reproducible by `sendmsg` system call. This results in a panic when the send completion runs. The exact panic varies depending on what elements of the container structure get corrupted. The fix is to use the correct expression in _pad_sdma_tx_descs() to test the need to expand the descriptor array. With this patch the crashes are no longer reproducible and the machine is stable.
