What it actually does

The vulnerability occurs when a connect() on an unbound socket succeeds in adding it to the ehash via check_established() but then fails to allocate the corresponding bhash2 bucket; the socket state is not reverted, leaving an unconnected socket occupying an ehash entry and triggering warnings in inet_csk_destroy_sock() on close.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems under memory pressure during connection setup may experience kernel warnings or reduced network stack reliability, potentially affecting availability of services on high-connection workloads; the issue is rare but present across many kernel versions until patched.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker invokes connect() on an unbound socket; under allocation failure (via fault injection, memory pressure, or similar), the post-check_established() tb2 allocation fails, leaving the socket hashed in ehash without proper cleanup; subsequent close operations hit the inconsistent state and produce warnings.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 729bc77af438a6e67914c97f6f3d3af8f72c0131; rebuild and reboot affected systems; apply vendor-supplied kernel packages that backport the fix.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 729bc77af438a6e67914c97f6f3d3af8f72c0131 or later equivalent; attempt reproducer sequences involving connect() under memory pressure and verify absence of the inet_csk_destroy_sock warning.

Typical attack path

  1. Call connect() on an unbound TCP/DCCP socket
  2. Trigger or encounter failure in inet_bind2_bucket_create after successful check_established()
  3. Leave socket in ehash without valid bhash2 binding
  4. Close the socket to trigger inet_csk_destroy_sock() warning

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the exact WARN_ON message from inet_csk_destroy_sock and related stack traces involving dccp_close or inet_release; correlate with fault-injection or slab allocation failure messages around the same timestamp.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all Linux hosts, especially those exposed to untrusted local processes
  • Monitor for the specific warning in kernel logs during connection-heavy operations
  • Apply the fix within standard patch cycles given low EPSS and non-KEV status

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dccp/tcp: Unhash sk from ehash for tb2 alloc failure after check_estalblished(). syzkaller reported a warning [0] in inet_csk_destroy_sock() with no repro. WARN_ON(inet_sk(sk)->inet_num && !inet_csk(sk)->icsk_bind_hash); However, the syzkaller's log hinted that connect() failed just before the warning due to FAULT_INJECTION. [1] When connect() is called for an unbound socket, we search for an available ephemeral port. If a bhash bucket exists for the port, we call __inet_check_established() or __inet6_check_established() to check if the bucket is reusable. If reusable, we add the socket into ehash and set inet_sk(sk)->inet_num. Later, we look up the corresponding bhash2 bucket and try to allocate it if it does not exist. Although it rarely occurs in real use, if the allocation fails, we must revert the changes by check_established(). Otherwise, an unconnected socket could illegally occupy an ehash entry. Note that we do not put tw back into ehash because sk might have already responded to a packet for tw and it would be better to free tw earlier under such memory presure.
