What it actually does
Race condition in Linux kernel AF_UNIX socket handling allows circular locking dependency between sk_lock and u->iolock during setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF) and skb_consume_udp operations, leading to potential deadlock.
Why it matters to the business
Network services on affected Linux systems may experience hangs or crashes under concurrent socket operations, disrupting connectivity and requiring reboots in high-traffic environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts concurrent recvmsg and setsockopt calls on AF_UNIX sockets to trigger the lock ordering violation reported by syzbot, potentially causing kernel deadlock without needing elevated privileges beyond socket access.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 897f75e2cde8a5f9f7529b55249af1fa4248c83b or later; rebuild and reboot affected systems. No backports or workarounds are provided.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the referenced commit; run lockdep-enabled kernels with syzkaller-style socket fuzzing to confirm absence of the circular dependency warning.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access to a Linux system running an affected kernel
- Create or attach to an AF_UNIX datagram socket
- Issue concurrent recvmsg operations while calling setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF)
- Trigger the lock acquisition sequence that violates the documented dependency order
- Cause kernel thread deadlock or system instability
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for lockdep circular locking warnings involving sk_lock-AF_UNIX and u->iolock; review audit logs for unusual setsockopt calls on unix sockets preceding hangs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all multi-user or network-facing Linux hosts within standard patch cycles
- Monitor upstream stable kernel releases for the fix commit
- Review socket-using applications for high concurrency on AF_UNIX sockets
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: implement lockless setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF) syzbot reported a lockdep violation [1] involving af_unix support of SO_PEEK_OFF. Since SO_PEEK_OFF is inherently not thread safe (it uses a per-socket sk_peek_off field), there is really no point to enforce a pointless thread safety in the kernel. After this patch : - setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF) no longer acquires the socket lock. - skb_consume_udp() no longer has to acquire the socket lock. - af_unix no longer needs a special version of sk_set_peek_off(), because it does not lock u->iolock anymore. As a followup, we could replace prot->set_peek_off to be a boolean and avoid an indirect call, since we always use sk_set_peek_off().
