What it actually does
Use-after-free in mlx5_dpll delayed work timer handling allows a freed slab object to be written after device removal unbinds the driver while a timer remains armed.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using Mellanox mlx5 network adapters may experience kernel crashes or memory corruption during driver unload or device hot-unplug, leading to downtime and potential data loss on affected Linux hosts.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers repeated bind/unbind operations or device removal while pending delayed work timers are active; the timer callback then executes after the mlx5_dpll structure has been freed, writing to the dangling pointer.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.7.6 or later, or apply the fix from commit 1596126ea50228f0ed96697bae4e9368fda02c56 in the stable tree; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 1596126ea50228f0ed96697bae4e9368fda02c56 or is at least 6.7.6; confirm absence of KASAN slab-use-after-free reports referencing __run_timers and mlx5_dpll during driver unload tests.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or trigger mlx5 device events via userspace or hardware actions
- Issue repeated auxiliary device bind/unbind or driver unbind operations
- Allow pending delayed work timers to fire after mlx5_dpll_remove has freed the structure
- Trigger slab reuse or write through the freed timer object to corrupt kernel memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free warnings mentioning __run_timers and mlx5_dpll; inspect crash dumps for timer callbacks executing after mlx5_dpll_remove; correlate with auxiliary_bus_remove or device unbind events.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __run_timers.part.0
- mlx5_dpll_probe
- mlx5_dpll_remove
- auxiliary_bus_remove
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching production systems with mlx5 hardware within the next maintenance window
- Monitor for KASAN or slab corruption reports on hosts using mlx5_dpll
- Restrict unprivileged access to device bind/unbind sysfs interfaces until patched
- Test driver unload and device removal scenarios in staging environments before broad rollout
