What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in sysfs_add_link_to_group during iommu_device_link when a new pci_controller is allocated for DLPAR-added PCI devices without prior iommu_device_register initialization on powerpc pSeries.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crash and system instability occurs on affected PowerPC servers when PCI devices are added dynamically, interrupting workloads that rely on live hardware reconfiguration.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with access to trigger DLPAR slot addition (via drmgr, sysfs writes to add_slot_store, or management interfaces) causes the kernel to allocate an uninitialized pci_controller, leading to the NULL dereference and oops when iommu_probe_device walks the notifier chain.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.7.7-1 or later on Debian 13 systems; apply the fix that calls iommu_device_register during init_phb_dynamic for DLPAR paths.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel is at least 6.7.7-1, then perform a controlled DLPAR PCI device addition and confirm no NULL dereference oops occurs in the iommu or rpadlpar_io code paths.
Typical attack path
- Obtain privileges to invoke DLPAR add operations on pSeries hardware
- Trigger pci_device_add for a new device via of_scan_pci_dev or equivalent
- Reach iommu_init_device without the iommu_device having been registered
- Dereference uninitialized pointer inside sysfs_add_link_to_group
- Cause kernel oops and potential denial of service
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops messages containing "NULL pointer dereference", "sysfs_add_link_to_group", "iommu_init_device", "dlpar_add_slot", or "rpadlpar_io" around the time of PCI hot-add events.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to 6.7.7-1 or newer on all powerpc pSeries systems that support DLPAR
- Restrict DLPAR management interfaces to trusted administrators until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for oops signatures involving iommu_init_device and dlpar_add_slot

The above added iommu_device structure to pci_controller. During system boot, PCI devices are discovered and this newly added iommu_device structure is initialized by a call to iommu_device_register(). During DLPAR add of a PCI device, a new pci_controller structure is allocated but there are no calls made to iommu_device_register() interface. Fix is to register the iommu device during DLPAR add as well. [mpe: Trim oops and tweak some change log wording]
