Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in how the Linux kernel cleans up certain local socket connections can slowly waste memory, which may eventually slow systems or cause crashes if not corrected by updates.

What it actually does

Memory leak in Linux kernel af_unix garbage collection when handling unix_sk(sk)->oob_skb references created via SCM_RIGHTS with MSG_OOB, leaving sockets in gc_candidates list after purge and bypassing kfree_skb due to missing OOB handling introduced in prior SCM support changes.

Why it matters to the business

Gradual memory exhaustion on Linux systems with heavy Unix domain socket usage such as containers or local IPC services, raising operational overhead and potential availability issues; low immediate risk given stable low EPSS and lack of KEV listing, though Android kernel contexts increase exposure in mobile ecosystems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a Unix socketpair, sends one socket's file descriptor to itself using sendmsg with SCM_RIGHTS and MSG_OOB|MSG_PROBE flags to establish a self-cyclic reference; the garbage collector fails to release the oob_skb, leaking the socket and associated memory. Threat actor references to Android kernel RCE campaigns highlight potential targeting of similar socket paths in downstream mobile kernels.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 5.15.149 or later; for affected Chromium packages on Debian 11/12/13 upgrade to 87.0.4280.88-0.1 and for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS upgrade chromium-browser to 85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.16.04.2. Apply patches that explicitly free oob_skb in GC and null the pointer before release.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify running kernel version matches or exceeds fixed releases; inspect /proc/net/protocol for unexpected socket counts; reproduce the syzbot reproducer and confirm absence of the gc_candidates WARN_ON_ONCE after upgrade.

Typical attack path

  1. Create AF_UNIX SOCK_STREAM socketpair
  2. Use sendmsg with msg_control containing SCM_RIGHTS referencing the peer socket and MSG_OOB flag
  3. Trigger __unix_gc via workload or explicit collection
  4. Observe failure to call kfree_skb on oob_skb leaving socket on global lists

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the __unix_gc warning at net/unix/garbage.c:345; monitor /proc/net/protocol socket counts for unexplained growth; correlate with process activity involving sendmsg on AF_UNIX sockets with OOB flags.

What your security team should do

  • Apply kernel updates to 5.15.149+ on all Linux hosts within 30 days
  • Audit Unix socket usage in containerized workloads and Android-derived systems
  • Monitor kernel logs for __unix_gc warnings and memory pressure metrics
  • Review downstream dependents of the Linux kernel for similar OOB handling issues

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_unix: Call kfree_skb() for dead unix_(sk)->oob_skb in GC. syzbot reported a warning [0] in __unix_gc() with a repro, which creates a socketpair and sends one socket's fd to itself using the peer. socketpair(AF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM, 0, [3, 4]) = 0 sendmsg(4, {msg_name=NULL, msg_namelen=0, msg_iov=[{iov_base="\360", iov_len=1}], msg_iovlen=1, msg_control=[{cmsg_len=20, cmsg_level=SOL_SOCKET, cmsg_type=SCM_RIGHTS, cmsg_data=[3]}], msg_controllen=24, msg_flags=0}, MSG_OOB|MSG_PROBE|MSG_DONTWAIT|MSG_ZEROCOPY) = 1 This forms a self-cyclic reference that GC should finally untangle but does not due to lack of MSG_OOB handling, resulting in memory leak. Recently, commit 11498715f266 ("af_unix: Remove io_uring code for GC.") removed io_uring's dead code in GC and revealed the problem. The code was executed at the final stage of GC and unconditionally moved all GC candidates from gc_candidates to gc_inflight_list. That papered over the reported problem by always making the following WARN_ON_ONCE(!list_empty(&gc_candidates)) false. The problem has been there since commit 2aab4b969002 ("af_unix: fix struct pid leaks in OOB support") added full scm support for MSG_OOB while fixing another bug. To fix this problem, we must call kfree_skb() for unix_sk(sk)->oob_skb if the socket still exists in gc_candidates after purging collected skb. Then, we need to set NULL to oob_skb before calling kfree_skb() because it calls last fput() and triggers unix_release_sock(), where we call duplicate kfree_skb(u->oob_skb) if not NULL. Note that the leaked socket remained being linked to a global list, so kmemleak also could not detect it. We need to check /proc/net/protocol to notice the unfreed socket.
