What it actually does
Missing validation of usbnet_get_endpoints() return value allows failure to propagate, resulting in use of invalid endpoint data and subsequent kernel crash or driver malfunction on affected USB network devices.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the sr9800 USB Ethernet adapter may experience unexpected reboots or loss of network connectivity when the driver encounters endpoint initialization failure, increasing downtime risk on Linux hosts with the vulnerable module loaded.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies or triggers a USB device configuration that causes usbnet_get_endpoints() to fail; the absent error check leads to dereference of invalid data and a kernel panic, achieving local denial of service.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix by updating the Linux kernel to commit 424eba06ed405d557077339edb19ce0ebe39e7c7 or later stable release containing the usbnet_get_endpoints() return-value check; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of the error-check patch in the sr9800 driver source; confirm kernel version or git commit includes 424eba06ed405d557077339edb19ce0ebe39e7c7 and test driver load with a device that previously triggered the failure path.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a Linux system with the sr9800 driver present
- Attach or emulate a USB device that induces usbnet_get_endpoints() failure
- Trigger driver initialization path without error handling
- Cause kernel crash or device malfunction
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for sr9800 or usbnet initialization failures around device attach events; look for oops or panic traces referencing endpoint handling in the driver.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel update to the fixed commit within standard patch windows given local-only attack vector and low EPSS
- Audit systems for sr9800 module usage and restrict untrusted USB device attachment via policy or hardware controls
- Monitor kernel logs for usbnet or sr9800 initialization errors as an interim detection measure
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sr9800: Add check for usbnet_get_endpoints Add check for usbnet_get_endpoints() and return the error if it fails in order to transfer the error.
