What it actually does

The flaw occurs in create_pending_snapshot() which copies the source root item including a refs field of 0 for deleted subvolumes; btrfs_insert_root() then creates an invalid root leading to btrfs_get_new_fs_root() returning -ENOENT and triggering a transaction abort that forces the BTRFS filesystem read-only.

Why it matters to the business

BTRFS-based storage on affected Linux systems can unexpectedly enter read-only mode during snapshot operations on recently deleted subvolumes, interrupting workloads, requiring manual recovery or reboots, and increasing operational overhead especially on systems with high subvolume churn.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access to a BTRFS filesystem issues a snapshot ioctl against a file descriptor referencing a subvolume that has already been deleted; the race between deletion and snapshot creation is exploited after subvol_sem is acquired, causing the kernel to abort the transaction and mount the volume read-only.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c06941564027bdbc01d2df7f41e333c11cb0482d or later; rebuild and deploy the updated kernel across all affected systems; after update, verify BTRFS snapshot operations succeed on deleted subvolumes without triggering aborts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; reproduce the snapshot-on-deleted-subvolume scenario in a test environment and verify no transaction abort or forced read-only transition occurs; inspect dmesg for absence of 'BTRFS: Transaction aborted (error -2)' messages during snapshot creation.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local user access on a Linux system using BTRFS
  2. Create or identify a subvolume and delete it while holding a reference
  3. Issue BTRFS_IOC_SNAP_CREATE_V2 ioctl against the deleted subvolume reference
  4. Trigger transaction commit that invokes create_pending_snapshot
  5. Observe filesystem abort and transition to read-only state

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for BTRFS transaction abort messages containing 'error -2' or 'No such entry' followed by forced readonly state; correlate with process activity invoking btrfs_ioctl_snap_create_v2 or mksnapshot around the time of the abort.

  • BTRFS: Transaction aborted (error -2)
  • BTRFS info (device .* state EA): forced readonly
  • BTRFS warning (device .* state EA): Skipping commit of aborted transaction
  • create_pending_snapshot.*errno=-2 No such entry

What your security team should do

  • Apply the fixed kernel commit immediately on all BTRFS deployments given the potential for denial-of-service via read-only transition
  • Audit systems for frequent subvolume deletion patterns that could increase exposure
  • Monitor kernel logs for BTRFS transaction abort indicators until patches are deployed
  • Test snapshot workflows in staging before production rollout of the updated kernel

BTRFS: error (device vdc: state EA) in cleanup_transaction:2055: errno=-2 No such entry This happens because create_pending_snapshot() initializes the new root item as a copy of the source root item. This includes the refs field, which is 0 for a deleted subvolume. The call to btrfs_insert_root() therefore inserts a root with refs == 0. btrfs_get_new_fs_root() then finds the root and returns -ENOENT if refs == 0, which causes create_pending_snapshot() to abort. Fix it by checking the source root's refs before attempting the snapshot, but after locking subvol_sem to avoid racing with deletion.
