A bug in the Linux kernel's handling of certain network sockets can let the system use memory that has already been freed, potentially crashing the machine or allowing an attacker with local access to take control.

What it actually does
Missing sock_orphan() call during LLC socket release leaves a stale sk_wq pointer that can be dereferenced after the socket is freed, resulting in use-after-free in sock_wfree and related waitqueue handling.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or memory corruption on systems using LLC sockets can cause service outages, require reboots, and create windows for local attackers to escalate privileges; widespread Linux kernel deployments amplify exposure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts LLC socket operations that trigger release without proper orphaning, then races with network stack cleanup paths to dereference the freed waitqueue structure during skb processing.
How to fix it
Upgrade to Linux kernel commits containing 6b950c712a9a05cdda4aea7fcb2848766576c11b or later stable releases that ensure sock_orphan() is invoked at LLC release time.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source, verify no KASAN reports on LLC socket close under load, and test socket lifecycle with syzkaller-style fuzzing.
Typical attack path
- Create and configure an LLC socket via socket(AF_LLC)
- Trigger protocol release path without full orphaning
- Force concurrent skb release or napi processing
- Access freed sk_wq pointer leading to slab use-after-free
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports referencing sock_wfree, waitqueue_active, or LLC socket paths; inspect crash dumps for stale sk_wq pointers during napi or skb release.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all exposed systems before any public exploit appears
- Monitor kernel changelogs for related socket ownership audits
- Restrict unprivileged local access where LLC sockets are unnecessary
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: llc: call sock_orphan() at release time syzbot reported an interesting trace [1] caused by a stale sk->sk_wq pointer in a closed llc socket. In commit ff7b11aa481f ("net: socket: set sock->sk to NULL after calling proto_ops::release()") Eric Biggers hinted that some protocols are missing a sock_orphan(), we need to perform a full audit. In net-next, I plan to clear sock->sk from sock_orphan() and amend Eric patch to add a warning.
