What it actually does

Use-after-free in btrfs scrub when handling chunks whose length is not 64K aligned, causing scrub_submit_initial_read to expect a single endio callback while btrfs_submit_bio splits the bio and invokes endio multiple times, freeing bvecs that later accesses touch.

Why it matters to the business

Filesystem scrubbing on affected Linux systems may trigger kernel crashes or unrepaired errors, especially on ext4-converted btrfs volumes; low urgency given stable low exploit probability and absence from known campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access issues an ioctl that starts btrfs scrub on a vulnerable ext4-converted filesystem; the scrub enumerates a misaligned chunk, submits a read that gets split, the first endio frees structures, and the second endio performs the use-after-free leading to KASAN reports or panic.

How to fix it

Upgrade Linux kernel packages to version 5.10.178-1 or newer on Debian 11 systems; apply the two fixes that limit scrub_read_endio bit updates to the actual chunk range and ensure scrub_submit_initial_read only reads within chunk boundaries.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify running kernel is at or above the fixed version; run btrfs scrub on a test ext4-converted volume and confirm absence of "unable to find chunk map" errors and KASAN reports.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell on target system
  2. Mount or access an ext4-converted btrfs volume
  3. Invoke btrfs scrub via ioctl or btrfs command
  4. Trigger bio splitting at non-64K chunk boundary
  5. Cause second endio to access freed bvec

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for "unable to find chunk map", KASAN slab-use-after-free in __blk_rq_map_sg during btrfs scrub paths, or virtblk_prep_rq call traces; examine dmesg or journalctl for btrfs critical errors at logical addresses near chunk boundaries.

  • unable to find chunk map for logical
  • BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __blk_rq_map_sg
  • scrub: started on devid
  • BTRFS critical (device
  • submit_initial_group_read

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on any Debian 11 systems using btrfs
  • Disable or restrict btrfs scrub operations until patched
  • Monitor for kernel oops or KASAN reports during filesystem maintenance

This means btrfs_submit_bio() would split the bio, and trigger endio function for both of the two halves. However scrub_submit_initial_read() would only expect the endio function to be called once, not any more. This means the first endio function would already free the bbio::bio, leaving the bvec freed, thus the 2nd endio call would lead to use-after-free. [FIX] - Make sure scrub_read_endio() only updates bits in its range Since we may read less than 64K at the end of the chunk, we should not touch the bits beyond chunk boundary. - Make sure scrub_submit_initial_read() only to read the chunk range This is done by calculating the real number of sectors we need to read, and add sector-by-sector to the bio. Thankfully the scrub read repair path won't need extra fixes: - scrub_stripe_submit_repair_read() With above fixes, we won't update error bit for range beyond chunk, thus scrub_stripe_submit_repair_read() should never submit any read beyond the chunk.
